Post subject: Flathead timing

My 51 F-1 has a 51 Merc flathead in it. I rebuilt it and am having trouble timing it. I know the procedure but end up having to rotate the distributor as far as it will go to get it in time(almost). If I pull out the distributor and move it one tooth the timing ends up with the distributor turned all the way the other direction. Either way, it runs like it is retarded.
Question: Could I have the distributor gear on wrong or maybe have the wrong gear? I built the engine out of parts from three engines...all 1950-53 engines.
When I drove flatheads in my younger days the distributor always ended up about midway in it's adjustment travel.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Try rotating plug wires one position.

Are you sure you have the cam timed properly? If it seems to run like it is
retarded
regardless of which way you install the distributor, it sounds like
something else is to blame.
