Some mirrors have a set screw that keeps it firmly attached to the
puck/mount.
Some mirrors are attached or detached by twisting the mirror about 90
degrees. Some even have screws in the mirror that must be tightened before
attaching to its mount. ('91 Passat)
I am not up on what the Porsche mirrors look like. <
Can you put up a picture of the mirror's mounting area on the internet
somewhere?

I'm just as confused as ever.
I'm used to american cars where the mirror mounts on a little puck
that is glued to the windshield, and the mirror can be removed from
the puck without removing the puck from the windshield. usually held
on by a set screw, but the Porsche mirrors don't have that. It does
appear that there is a separate puck, but I'm not sure how to deal
with it, hence my question.
Right now, my car has the mirror that was on it when I bought it, but
it is not firmly attached to the puck, and I have in the past tried to
slide it on the puck without success (trying to force it on with water
pump pliers didn't work.) I have a replacement mirror which
*includes* another puck, and the two appear to be firmly and
permanently attached.
So... do I a) remove the new mirror from its puck and slide it onto
the puck that's on my windshield, and if so, how? or b) remove the
puck that's on the windshield now and glue the new mirror onto the
windshield as an assembly?
