i read some other posts on this - so you actually cut the rear panel
for the non-4x6's, b/c the grille is for 4x6? then they mount ... on
the panel? ... OR you use the modified backing plate and leave the
panel alone?

one more : i was considering using a razor to cut the vinyl that's
under the window gasket in the case that i leave the (other) window in
place - as long as there is sufficient vinyl to go under the gasket at
the end of the job, are there any troubles associated with that?

pulling the window is easy, putting it back is easy - don't cut the vinyl

I said to cut the sheet metal that is underneath the trim - you have vinly
on top of some brown colored wood/cardboard stuff, and under that is the
sheet metal that forms the inner part of the body - you can cut that sheet
metal if you need to for a 6X9 - just cut the minimum, and don't mess up the
seat belt. There is NO grille on a 944, just some holes through the
vinyl - don't make your car look like some idiot owned it by cutting those
rear panels - do the job right - you have a really nice car, don't mess it
up
