Does anyone have an r2 carb they would let go. I dont mind rebuilding
one. The one I have runs great over 1200 but wont idle. I checked
timing, reset floats, checked fuel flow, etc, etc. Seems like an
internal vacuum leak, almost like someone swapped parts of the carb
body from a non sealed unit??? thanks

I was looking for one myself until I discovered the problem with mine
was the incorrect rods and jets that fixed it. My suggestion would be
to keep an eye on EBAY. The seem to surface about once a month but go
for about $400.00 when they close.

I spent close to two years looking for an R2 carb. There just is not
that many around. Michael, you live in a dream world. Tom, pack yours
up and send it to T-Bow. It will cost close to $300. but it will come
back correct and looking like new. Even if you did find a diifferent
one to buy you would still be sending it out to be gone over anyway.

You have to know how to look on EBAY GTtim. I have seen two in last
two months. Commernts like me "living in a dream world" are not very
polite.

Tom,
There was an article in Hemmings Muscle Machines last winter. The
issue has a red early '60's Vette on the cover. I think it was Feb
issue. There was a place in Pennsylvannia that really does a great job
on the old AFBs. They disassemble the throttle plates and shafts and
rebush the throttle body for a nice tight seal.
I'll bet that under boost you'll find fuel on the outside of the
throttle shaft area. The shaft area is a great source of vacuum leaks
that can make it difficult to get the idle within specs. Contact me off
the list and I'll find the article and scan a copy of it to you ,if you
are interested.
You might be happier fixing what you already have, rather than
having to fix up an E-Bay pig in a poke. Good luck in whatever you
decide. Joe

You can't just search EBAY for Studebaker R2 AFB. You have to go
through the carter afb listings. I have several different searches
including the specific carb #.

Unless you have a show car that you are trying to keep stock, I really reccomend the Edelbrock Performer as an R2 carb. It is a brand new out of the box replacement. The only two things I had to do were order the marine pump kit, to seal the accelerator pump shaft, and to modify the top. Some folks use the top section off their old carb, I just used a different air filter housing.

The carb has performed beautifully. It is easily tuned. I can change rods and jets in under 15 minutes and drive away.

Mark,

I thought the floats also needed to be modified or changed because the
standard type will collapse under pressure.

Michael,
I apologize for sounding impolite, I didn't mean it that way.
I've tried various EBAY searches and I didn't find anything when I was
looking. In general I find EBAY too tedious to be very useful to
supply me with anything I really needed when I needed it. Thanks for
the advice.

There is a hot idle compensator valve that created an idle problem for
me, I went the Edelbrock route, but I wonder if that's something that
can be blocked or plugged as it isn't present on most AFB's.

Intake manifold leaks can make a smooth idle impossible, does it stall
or is it just rough? Black smoke or just dies?

Try to advance the timing some and then see if it will idle at a lower
RPM. Weak advance springs could be bringing centrifugal in too quickly
then when you try to adjust the idle down the timing retards. If your
R2 setting is like mine it is 24 at 1600 RPM. Everything could look
right at that point. You may have to go back and forth a couple of
times, advancing and lowering the idle then rechecking timing.

Tom,
Here is the info on a place that will rebuild your carb better
than new. They install bushings on the throttle shaft for a really good
seal, better than the factory, or anyone else's rebuild I've seen.

RaceKrafters Automotive Machine 1140 Dillersville rd, Lancaster
Pa. 17601 717-399-8780. The article in Hemmings muscle machines is in
the February 2005 issue. It also shows the Plain Brown Wrapper in their
Weekend Warrior column. This is a worthwhile issue to have in your
literature collection. The article showcases a very comprehensive
overhaul and modification on the AFB from a 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T 440.
In the end they tested the carb on an engine before delivery. The
articles states that after the rebuild the engine produced 40 Ft Lbs of
additional torque and the fuel consumption was down by 15 lbs per hour.
I never heard of that measurement before. It is something to look into
before you spend your money. I have 2 R-2 cores that will be going out
to them after the new year. I am using a Performer Marine carb on my
R-2 at the moment, with the AFB airhorn . It works OK ,but my entire
package needs some tweaking and refinement. I can't say whether it is
an improvement or not. Best of luck to you with your project, Joe

The floats need to be filled if you are running high boost, but they seem to be fine with 5-8 psi.
