Is there any problem getting scheduled maint done at the shop of my choice?
The owners manual makes it seem like the dealer is the other place that can
do the job without messing something up.

The answer depends on the shop of your choice, as some are more competent
than others. Scheduled maintenance can be performed at any competent shop,
however, any problems caused by the shop or the use of aftermarket parts
would be the responsibility of the shop or the aftermarket parts supplier.

Lexus will charge you plenty. After all, if you can afford to buy one, you
surely can afford to operate it. Depending on the model, a Toyota dealer
may be an option.
