I have a 1998 that has 115,000 miles on it. Lots of clinks and clanks, but
I've replaced about every factory part on the thing in the past six years
and it's not such a bad second car now.

I also have a '98 Malibu, has 121K, I bought it recently and since I've
owned
it, the 'check engine light' has continued to go off, each time it's
something else.
alternator, ignition sensor, bad fuel injector, etc. These repairs have been
averaging
$300 - $400. This car has been an absolute lemon! My other chevy (1968
Camaro)
has caused fewer problems, and it is 37 years old!

I also have a 98 Malibu 3.1 with 113,000 KM; the only negative thing I can
say about it is the car eats through breaks.... I am thinking of trying
ceramic next time around.
Overall, the car runs great. I change the oil (synthetic) every 5,000 and
just do the regular general maintenance that needs to be done to prolong
the life of the car.
I can't really complain. >> Stay informed about: how many miles does your malibu have |

Dunno...I got rid of the 2003 LS a little more then a year ago (that I had
bought new 9-months earlier). At the time it had about 5K miles on it. It
needed a few warranty repairs...the worst was severe water leaks when ever it
rained. The dealer had it for 5-days getting that fixed. Aside from that it
was simply the most noisy, uncomfortable and functionally maddening vehicle I
had ever owned...simply couldn't stand the car and was more than willing to
take the $6k hit to get rid of it. And I've owned several cars over the past
30+ years of buying cars. >> Stay informed about: how many miles does your malibu have |

As the owner of a much older Malibu I look at these 'lemon' posts on
the newer ones in awe of what GM has become, and to some extend new
cars in general. I rephrase the question as "How many miles does your
car have left?" I don't see a limit on mine. I'll just keep it up
forever. Doing so with a new one would be cost prohibitive.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: how many miles does your malibu have |

Yeah, that's exactly what I was saying...my '98 malibu has been
self-desrtucting according
to some unseen schedule, of course over 100K. On the other hand, my 1968
Camaro
is very dependable, I'm always tinkering with it, but it gives me a hell of
a lot of satisfaction
to be driving around in a car that is 37 years old! I see a few old Malibus
around too.

You'd need a complicated algorithym. It depends upon your personal
ability to repair the technology on the vehicle and the cost of those
parts. They say new cars are built to last longer. However, by 150K
some folks have spent a fortune on sensors, diagnosis, struts, intake
gaskets, and more. A well maintained older car should go 200K on the
driveline with minimal expense.
It's really a crap shoot though. The stakes are higher and more
painful with the new models. I didn't mean to turn this into a new vs.
old car rant. Not everybody can drive an old car. The new technology
is here and we have to live with it so the focus should be on how to
make it reliable and repair it more cheaply.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: how many miles does your malibu have |

I have a '98 LS, and it has something like 250,000 miles on it, and I
haven't really encountered all the problems that have apparently
plagued the 97 and 98 runs of the Malibu, though I do take pretty good
care of the thing. Still outruns a bunch of vehicles on the road.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: how many miles does your malibu have |

Me the wife and kids normally keep vehicles over 10 years and well into
six-figure mileage (few exceptions). The cost to do so hasn't been too
terrible (so far). >> Stay informed about: how many miles does your malibu have |

You are very lucky. You can be lucky or not lucky. Maintenance
improves your odds greatly, although that's not luck. Driving habits
can increase longevity also. I had a Vega for 14 years with no
driveline problems. I drove it to the junk yard because the body was
bending in half. When I touched the brakes the steering wheel would
rise up because the body was shortening. The Vega had a bad
reputation. My Mormon neighbor had a Honda with 75K. He drove
conservatively and followed all the maintenance schedules. The
transmission went out. Count your blessings.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: how many miles does your malibu have |

What do you mean "fixing" your car once a month? What kinds of things
are breaking?
Smaller items can really add up on these new cars. Long term I
concentrate on the driveline. If that is OK you can go on and on. I
like to fabricate parts. I even made a door handle when I could have
bought one for $7 at the junk yard. So that's where I'm coming from.
If you are also just fixing little things then you could still have a
car that will go over 200K.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: how many miles does your malibu have |
