I recently agreed to purchase a 37 Studebaker that is in fairly rough
condition...complete, but rough. Having recently been through a divorce
(four years of hell I might add) it was within my price range to purchase
and fortunately I do have the ablities to make or repair any of the body
panels and mechanicals. The thing is, I want to bring this car back to
life, but I don't want to restore it....sorry guys, please give me a minute
to finish. I can't afford to restore the car to it's original glory, but
what I want to do is hot rod it (or street rod it if your more inclined to
that term)....BUT I want to do it with Studebaker stuff. I would love to
put a 259 or 289 in it for "motor-vation", and I would like to utilize a TT
rear. Again, my main objective is to use as much Studebaker stuff as
possible (also read that as "can afford"), and I'm turning to all of you for
help in finding parts at a resonable cost, and also some guideance on what I
could do to improve braking and steering.
I want to end up with a car that will show the best of Studebaker...and I
DON'T want a Chevy / Ford / Mopar with a Studebaker skin
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Ron

A 259/289 engine will fit in the engine compartment without any major
surgery......
Barely.
The stock rear differential will probably not last long with that engine
twisting it, but you never know.
A TT rear will fit in there with newer wheels set to the right offset.
You didn't mention if it had the Planar suspension.
Your brakes will need to be upgraded, or rebuilt to perfection.
Steve Doorschlagg (sp?)put an R2 Avanti drivetrain in his Coupe Express and
it all fit, so a Coupe should work.
After spending a few years on a project '37...all I can tell you is to
persevere, and save up, 'cause you'll sure spend it. Fortunately, there
isn't more than $1500 to $2000 worth of chrome on those cars.
Buy yourself a good running rustbucket Cruiser and part it out... Disk
brakes, full flow 289, TT rear....

Hi Ron,
I may have just what you are looking for. I'll tell you what I have & stand
aside for the guys to comment on the suitability of what I want to offer you
for sale & also on the fairness of the price & terms.
The last couple months I've been on a buying binge & I have too many
projects. To clear space I need to sell one project.
I recently bought on eBay from JP, for the BIN price of $2500, a '63 259 V-8
full flow block that is fully rebuilt & it is hooked up to a truck 4 speed &
is currently installed in a very solid 62 Champ 1/2 ton pickup that has
rusted floors & rocker panels. This makes for easy storage & also gives you
a truck that is well worth saving to somebody else & you can sell it or use
it for parts. The truck does not have brakes nor are the lights or clutch
pedal working so it is a roller but could be a beater in no time.
I can vouch for this - the engine runs great & all I think it will need is a
carb rebuild on the Holley 2bbl (if you choose to use it) & maybe a starter.
Oh yeah & it also doesn't have an oil dipstick. My opinion of the engine
running is based on a few driveway startups - currently the fuel pump is
hooked up to run off a bottle to avoid messing with the old truck fuel tank
& possible contamination.
As far as the truck - it was & is still considered as free with the engine &
is useful beyond that. It is an extremely solid truck from California & has
value to get on the road or ?
I've got $3270 in the package & I will take a loss just to free up garage
space & to help someone else get over the hump on a project.
Therefore, Ron this may be your lucky day as I will sell it to you at a loss
just to help you over the hump & also to help my own situation.
If you choose to buy the package I would expect it to be out of my garage
fairly quickly (maybe a month at most) & also would want a cashiers check or
money order in a few days. Not trying to play hardball here - it is just
best to communicate one's needs.
My price is $2000 .............
Let me know ??? This could be a win-win for us at that price IMO! I'd like
to see the 259V8 in your 37. What model 37 do you have?

I would like to thank everyone for their help and suggestions (feel free to
continue sending them). I think I'm going to take Jeff Rice's suggestion,
and look for a rusted Cruiser for a donor car and go from there. I thought
about the one on Ebay right now, but I don't want to part out a solid car
like that...besides I might get beat up if I did something like that <G>.

Ron,
Go ahead and do what you think is best for you. It's your car.
Personally, I applaud your choice of engine, but I'm not going to
think the less of you if you choose one of those ugly belly-button
motors. <G>
FWIW, I have a '37 Dictator 4 door sedan with single side-mount that
is an already half-built street rod. Mustang II front end, Ch*vy rear
end, etc. Mounts set up for the dread belly-button motor, too,
although you could fit almost anything in there.
I may never do anything with this car, so I'd entertain the idea of
some sort of swap, if you are interested. And I'd certainly be willing
to correspond with you on this project, or give you measurements and
such.
e-Mail me off-group if you want to discuss any of this.

Thank you Gordon,
I have built several Ford and Chevy cars over the years (sorry I can't
sensor the names...My favorite car is still the 66 / 67 Novas), but a friend
of mine has been into Studebakers for many years. He had a 1934 President
coupe on the cover of TW back in August (?) of 1984, and owns a 37 Coupe
(street rod) and a 48 convertable, and just sold another 48 convertable two
months ago. I remember some of the neighbors having Studebakers from my
childhood, but my friend really got me hooked on the Studes. I actually
bought one from him years ago that was set up with all of the "other"
manufactures parts, but had to send it down the road (it and a 67 Nova were
the first casualty or the seperation and divorce). From that point I swore
I would get another Studebaker, and now that I have, I am intent on building
it with as much Studebaker as possible....one for me and my desire to be
just a little different then everyone else, and two, I just think the world
needs another Studebaker street rod out there to up hold the Studebaker name
and maybe....hopefully, make some of you other guys proud.
Again I want to thank all of you that have offered help and suggestions and
as I get into the car I may be calling on you for some additional support.
