This has been back to Chevy, and other mechanics.
98 Chevy S10, 4 cylinder.
On the highway, if I go 1 mile over 70mph, the headlights flicker.
So do the dash lights, real fast, not constant, and not a regular pattern.
It's been tested and retested by Chevy and others, alternator and system
seems fine.
They can't reproduce at city speeds.
And it will only do this irregular, VERY FAST, flicker at 70 mph or more.
And I do mean 70, if the speedometer is 69, it doesn't flicker.
And also, you can see the speedometer needle bounce when the lights flicker
as if it quit for a split second.
I've tried with Cruise control on, off, enabled, standby.
Steady speed or on acceleration, no difference I can discern.
Keep in mind that the Chevy S10 has headlights always on, but obviously I
don't see it in daytime.
The obvious cure is not go faster than 69mph...but occasionally you NEED to
pass. LOL
please and thank you. >> Stay informed about: headlights, dashlights flicker at 70mph |

I had a similar problem with my 2000 Venture (also a Chevrolet product)
minivan, except it wasn't speed related. My friend experienced the same
thing in a rental Venture minivan several years ago.
After several trips to the dealer, they found a service bulletin about it,
and repaired something. That was several years ago and it hasn't happened
since. I don't have a record of the repair and don't know what they did..

It looks like TSB 3170B describes my problem exactly.
A search of the inet describes it.
But....how do I get this bulletin?
I'd hate to pay money only to find it ISN'T the problem.

well I wasted half a day sitting there while they tested everything and
found nothing wrong.
Apparently...they didn't do a search for any Service Bulletins.
I didn't know of the existence of the bulletins at that time.
so I'm reluctant to waste any more money on Chevy service.
So I researched my self and found that TSB 3170B tells us to remove a
grounding screw that holds the regulator and replace it with a different
screw that is available from Chevy part kit 10316685 which is described as a
'screw fro Bosch Generator' in the bulletin.
reminds me of the rhyme "for want of a nail, a kingdom was lost".
LOL
Thanks to all who offered suggestion and put me on the trail.
