.....happened to the GTV this morning. When I got in the clutch pedal seemed
further away - my first instinct was to adjust the seat. In fact it was
partly depressed and attempts to engage reverse produced a graunching noise.
The gear lever wouldn't move at all into any other gear.

Eventually got it off the drive by turning off the engine, selecting reverse
and starting with the clutch pedal fully depressed. This got me into the
road but then I was stuck as I couldn't get into a forward gear. Got first
by again turning off the engine and putting it in gear - this at least got
me out of the middle of the road and back on the drive. Walked over to the
local garage, found they were closed and walked back - 20 minutes or so.
Tried the car again. This time the clutch pedal was OK. Gears selected OK
and I drove it around the block with no trouble.

Had to go out and was unable to try it again until late afternoon, by which
time the pedal seemed to have depressed again, though not as much as the
morning and not enough to prevent gear selection. Again drove it around for
a bit with no problem. Am going to try again tomorrow and take it for a
longer blast, but does anyone have an idea what might be happening?

It was bloody cold here this morning and my wife says it's pining for the
Italian sun.

JC

Similar to what happened why my (147) slave cylinder was starting to die....
mine became 'spongy' a couple of random times, then was ok for a while,
before finally giving up the ghost 150 miles from home!

Think you've hit the nail on the head. Checked today and there's fluid on
the gearbox under the slave cylinder. Not enough to have caused a puddle on
the ground yet nor to have even triggered the warning light. The level was
only slightly below the max, surprising that it had such an effect.

Can't get to an Alfa specialist at moment so will talk to local guy tomorrow
and see if he can replace it.

Regards

Yeah - mine was the same, it's interesting trying to change gear with almost
zero clutch movement!

Hope yours is as easy as mine to fix - couple of hours on the 147, don't
know if it's a big job on the GTV!

I would agree, especially with the additional evidence.
