Doods!

I received the reinforcement for my smashed front bumper and turn lamp, but
all it had was the metal frame, not the rubber coating. The coating is in
pretty good shape, but I wonder if I should try to hunt down the rubber
coating as well? Can they use that same coating it has?

Natalie, scratching her head

Natalie,

Most bumpers have 3 parts: a metal frame, a foam layer on top of that, and
then an outer skin, which I think is what you're referring to when you say
"outer coating".

If the foam from the old bumper is not totally destroyed, you can re-use it,
even if it is a little smashed in because it will be hidden behind the outer
skin.

If the outer skin is in good condition, that is, no creases or tears, then
it can probably be re-used.

Depending on the model, the outer skin can be black or it can be painted.
If it is painted, an additive is mixed with the paint to make it flex. When
you see painted bumpers with cracked paint, there was an additive problem
when the bumper was re-painted.

Good luck!

Just to add to Ray's post, that foam (EPS, same as "Styrofoam") is bonded
to the bumper skin, not the reinforcing bar. It disintegrates when hit, so
you may find chunks missing entirely.

EPP is a better foam, with greater cohesivness, but automakers won't use it
because of cost.

Even if it has creases and tears, a body shop can often repair it if not
too badly damaged.

Thanks! I think the original bumper should be OK, or at the very least,
fairly easy on the eyes. I hope so, cuz I'm having no luck with finding that
damned thing!

Kind of like people, if the skin is relatively wrinkle-free, it's still
good!

Make sure that whoever installs the new bumper backing plate caulks all of
the seams where it is folded over and welded. It wouldn't hurt to give the
backing plate another coat of paint over the basic black primer in case you
move back to NH or some other part of the country where roads are salted.

By the way, IIRC, the Toyota's nomenclature is "cover, bumper".

Toyota makes good cars, but parts translation is a bit of a challenge,
especially when looking up part names.

For example, an ash tray is "receptacle, box"
The passenger assist grip in the original Tercel was "glip"

Well, our car ash trays never get used (We don't allow smoking in our car or
our home), so I don't care what it's called. Wink And my Echo has deep-sixed
Tercels anyway!

Hmmm, can't find the part there?

Hell if you were keen to pay the horrendous shipping I could get you more
AE82 FXGT bumpers than you could shake a stick at (really - most boyracers
buy the wee AE82s and throw wild bodykits on them).

Just make sure you empty them out before using valet parking or
going to a full-service car wash. They get conveniently cleaned out
(of any loose change) for you by the friendly and courteous workers.

Of course if you want some real fun, put a few marked quarters and
dollar bills in there, if you can find some use UV Ink so it isn't
obvious. And when you find that nice clean (and empty) ashtray have
the Car Wash Manager check all the workers' pockets before you leave.
Guaranteed excitement for everyone. ;-P

Wanna borrow my portable blacklight?

(Note: I haven't done this, but BOY I've been tempted to sting 'em
a few times. And I do have the blacklight: Take a regular camper's
battery fluorescent that takes a F4T5 lamp and 4 AA batteries, and put
in a F4T5/BLB lamp.)

Unless they get valet parking at Olive Garden, I think we're safe...
