Need more power and gas mileage

I had a friend with a small-block chevy in a full-size pickup (lowered,
*fat* tires, & all). He was getting 18 mpg. Wanted a big-block but didn't
want to get worse mileage. Decided to go with one anyway, but used a 700R4
(overdrive trans). Now getting 28 MPG! So the secret is to get an engine
with enough power so that you don't have to open the throttle much at
crusing speed, & an overdrive trans. Of course all the other things like
removing weight, etc. helps too.
