Sell it and buy a Geo.

Dodge trucks have histrorically gotten terrible mileage. The newer
trucks are better, but not by much. There are a couple of things you
can do, but your results will be minimal. Don't expect a dramatic
improvement.
Start with the basics: Air in, air out, good tune up, light weight
synthetic oil.
Do the stuff you hear about on the TV news: empty bed, light on
the throttle, etc.
Reprogram the computer.

That's about it. If you do the math, you'll find that money spent
to improve mileage will not pay for itself in the long run. Oh well.
It's a dodge.

Remove hood, pull engine/trans/exhause (aka exhaust), replace with 5.9L CTD
w/6sp tranny and exhause (aka exhaust). Replace hood. Modify as needed.

MPG depends on what you get now. Mainly keep your foot out of it.

BUT, for HP................

Install a 180 degree thermostat.

Install an 'OPEN' K&N air filter. {yeah, go ahead and laugh but this
does work. I have the dyno results to prove it}. If you want what
they call a cold air system just stick with your stock set up and add
the K&N but the open filter works better. About 3hp increase over the
cold air system.(If you don't like K&N then get another quality high
flo filter}. The after market 'cold air' systems are NOT really cold
air as they still suck from the engine compartment. At least the
factory system pulls the air from outside.

Get a throttle body from a 5.2. Polish and throat it. NOT PORT!. All
the guys that talk about porting a throttle body don't even know what
porting is. Simply polish up the velocity stacks with a dremel and
sanding drums then fine stones. Actually going from your 46mm to the
52mm alone will make a world of difference.

Get a new catalytic converter. Drill and knock out the insides so it
is full open {as long as there are no emissions tests in your area}
then add on a cat back system that is as simple as a straight through
glass pack with 2.5" in/out. If you have emission testing then get a
high flo cat and a cat back system. Leave the guts in the cat.

Get one of the simple 'power mods' off of eBay. Look for the guy that
sells them for $5 or so. All they are is a resistor and only costs
about $0.90 anyway but this is a cheap reprogram for your computer.

Now then you can talk about 1.6 or 1.7 :1 rockers.
All of this is simple bolt on and will make a HP difference.

I have these mods and still get 17mpg around town running a 4.10
Suregrip.

Don't bother with the throttle body risers unless, as I did, you want
to add dry nitrous. These things by themselves do not do anything but
they make an excellent tap point for nitrous injectors.

AMSOIL Series 2000 0W-30 synthetic motor oil. Delivered just over 5 more
miles per gallon for me and the performance improvement was obvious. Smile

Actually a good synthetic will help but more on the order or 1/2 to 1
mpg and maybe not any but it is very good engine protection. I prefer
Mobil 1 and NO I do not work for them nor own stock in them. I have,
however, torn down an engine with 78,000 miles on it that had never
run anything but Mobil 1 and it spec'ed out like new.

Now this is why people get on amsoil every time a post like this bs appears.
Don't ya find it odd that the major auto/truck makers don't put this snake
oil in every car /truck they sell?? For 5 miles more per gallon they would
blow everybody here.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

While I agree that a synthetic is a better lubricant and may offer better
protection and possibly slightly better mileage (depending on many things),
BS like this guy dumped out discounts any possible advantages and make the
entire product appear to be nothing more than complete BS. Like Roy said,
if it were capable of increasing mileage by 5 MPG, in today's world every
SUV and truck manufacturer would be using it as the factory fill.

Actually our 2003 Escape came with synthetic from the factory. 5w-30.
I think it's more the weight than the synthetic that increases the
milage but with the synthetic they can afford to run the lower weight.
Still, gotta be less than 5 mpg. I don't think I ever noticed any
change but I do use it for less wear on the engine and that IS a fact.
When I tear down a 70,000+ engine and it has 'NO' measurable wear,
that makes me a believer. Likewise, this engine had never run anything
but Chevron fuel and there were NO combustion chamber deposits AT ALL.
None on valve etc. Too bad they closed up the Chevrons in my area.
But I think most name brand fuels have similar additives to keep the
engines clean.

Hi:
I was inspired by the synthetic oil chat! This isn't in a truck
but a motorcycle. A KTM 640/LC4. New from the factory, I took it to
the factory to do oil changes until the warranty expired. Then I put
in this Spectrol Synthetic that KTM sent me. If you don't know these
motorcycles, the oil circulates between the engine and the
transmission, so I can 'feel' the difference in the shifter! It was a
dramatic change in shifting ease going synthetic, so I KNOW the engine
is turning easier. Had to cut the idle back even. If you want to go
synthetic, note you may find that Mobile1 is all over, but there are
better conventional oils. Mobile1 might be the worst synthetic.

Do you have a sure grip ? and if so do you run just the synthetic lube
or do you add the friction modifier?

I guess this is off topic but I too use it in the bike.
When I changed to it in an older, high milage one, the clutch started
to slip and then the starter clutch would not engage to start the
engine. After a bunch of new parts it worked again. I put it in the 03
Savage though from the 500 mile mark with no problem.
Someone told me that in the truck though, if you have a suregrip and
use synthetic you do not have to use the additive.
Wonder if anyone has done this ???................

most of the time you don't need an additive when using syn in the rear,if it
chatters on a turn then you put some in.otherwise you'll get alittle mpg esp
when it's colder.
