My tame dealer tells me he's never seen a broken belt on a 2.4 JTD. The
official service interval is 72K, I had mine done at 60K.

Is there much evidence of broken belts on the 1.9JTD? And is it still
72,000 for the first change? >> Stay informed about: Ouch! That hurt.... |

72K or every 5 years for JTD

Coward - there's no problem following manufacturers spec on the JTDs.
The petrols are far too delicate and I'd be as scared as you and
change the belts at least in line with the new(ish) spec.

Do it on its 5th birthday or at 72,000 miles - whichever is first and
*do not worry* - I've never heard of any JTD breaking a belt (unlike
Alfa petrols).

Yes, I'm a coward with cambelts.
The 1.9JTD is a very simple lump shared with lots of Fiats and
Vauxhalls, so I'd have no issues in shelling out for a 3 year change -
even with a service, I reckon my local guy could do it for 200 quid.

Good grief, that's cheap. My 72K was just shy of £490 - not including the
MOT which is what, £40 - £50 these days. £388 is a steal.
And I thought I did well. I've had the car just 3 years, bought it at 4
years old with 38K on the clock, previous owner had just had the 36K service
done (inc cambelt), cost him £848 (Northgate Alfa, Canterbury), although he
did have the rear hub eye bushes replaced.
Talking of the bushes I've never replaced them, is this something that
should be done as a matter of course at regular intervals?

I've just booked my 156 in for cambelt and variator change and it's
quoted at £380 + VAT inc. courtesy car from Rusper Alfa in Sussex
