Post subject: c230 Transmission Problems

I have a 99 c230 w/ 124K miles. The other day it just decided to NOT move when I put it into reverse. It took several gear changes for it to go into gear, and when it did, I heard a 'popping' sound and it jumped into gear. After that, I heard a rattling type of noise in and out of gear. It still drives, but makes noise. This noise increases with the RPM's.
So, I had it taken to a transmission shop that is trying to 'rip my head off' financially on the repair. I'm trying to locate the transmission (or another compatible one) on the internet, but I cant get anyone to give me a straight answer on what other model types that will fit my car. I know that having more to choose from would help me find a better price.
Heck, I'm not even sure that I need a new one...but I'm at the mercy of the repair shop right now, and that's what they are saying.

My mechanic will put it in for me, but I just have to find a part that's reasonably priced and will work....

If anyone can help me...I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks, Kris
Arkansas

Your car almost for sure has a transmission model 722.605 in it. That is
what my 99 c230K has in it. If you could find one from a car built in later
99, it will have the better bearing design that overcame some issues with
the needle bearing types. This guy is supposedly good:

First of all, I would take the car to MB dealer to have them diagnose the
problem... will cost you money for diagnosis.

If you don't want to take it to MB, then have your mechanic pull diagnostic
trouble codes out of the car, he will be able to read the transmission
codes. Write down all the codes.

Then call up these guys. They are the best.

As far as I see the automatic transmission with that part number is used
in W202 4 cyl. kompressor models C200 and C230 1998-2001. The
transmissions for W203 and the six cylinder models look quite different.

The transmission has to comply not only with respect to geometry and
mechanics but to the complex motor/transmission computer programs too.
