I have an 83 Gutless Ciera 2.2 liter, and that seems to be an undocumented
feature of the AC system. Encounter a slight hill, and the AC starts to shut
down so the car can climb the hill. I haven't explored the full parameters
of the power conservation; maybe it eventually shuts off the radio to save
that last bit of power.

It may not be a leak but instead a stuck flap door..you can check the
flap door @ center by removing the center a/c bezel ..The flsp door is
down and below there. I have seem them when they get stuck but if yours
moves freely by hand but does not move when a/c is switched on then the
actuator is bad..those things are a PITA to replace.

I hope this helps
