Can someone tell me if it is possible to know if a vehicle is a 2X4 or 4X4
from the VIN number considering a Highlaner model for instance.

Yes, it is possible, but I can't tell you which digit it is, and what
it should be. Back in the '70s and 80s I could have told you.
JT4RN64X - somewhere around the X told you the model

You might try this- http://fleet.toyota.com/html/50/vin_decoder.asp You
type in the VIN # and it decodes it. I don't know if there is a code for
4X4 or not. Digit #4 does say body type/drive type.

What is in position "4" -

"A" = 2DR Sedan 2WD
"B" = 4DR Sedan 2WD
"C" = 2DR Coupe 2WD
"D" = 3DR Liftback 2WD
"F" = 2DR Convertible 2WD
"G" = 4DR Wagon 2WD
"H" = 4DR Wagon 4WD
"K" = 5DR Wagon 2WD
"L" = 5DR Wagon 4WD
"M" = 5DR Door Van 2WD
"Z" = 5DR Wagon 2WD

If position 4 is an H or L, I assume it is 4WD.
