My neighbor and myself had a discussion last evening, she owns a 2003 Camry,
4 cyl. and I just bought the 2005 Tacoma sr5 access cab, 4 cyl., she asked
what kind of gas I put in the truck I told her Regular unleaded like my book
says, but she puts in premium in the camry, will it make a difference if I
don't use premium unleaded? If it starts to knock I know to switch to
premium, but I"m still in the break in period ...what does the collective
think? Thanks in advance.

I put 220k miles on a 91 4cyl Camary and it alway ran better on plus or premium, especailly in the warmer months and when sing A/C which greatly raises under hood temps. Owners manual states regular because of marketing concerns and the ECM will retard spark to limit knocking on low octane fuel but it will run better in warmer weather with better fuel because ECM will not have to retard spark into limit knock plain and simple. The altitude you live at effects it too because if you are at 4000 or 5000 feet you can get by on less octane too as well as in cooler weather as well.

Yes, you'll have more money in your bank account. Smile Other than that, the
difference is negligible.

"If it starts to knock I know to switch to
premium,"

Wrong answer. Spark knock in any modern computer controlled engine
is caused either by one of the electronic gizmos failing, or serious
carbon buildup in the combustion chamber.

Both of you will do fine running 87. There is no advantage running
premium in an engine designed for 87.

I doubt if the Camry needs premium ... she's wasting $$.

Tina: The computer in the truck adjusts to the gasoline you use,
and Premium is not needed. It will run just fine on regular, and save
you a LOT of money over the long haul.

There are only a few high-performance sports cars built where you
/must/ run Premium. Or people who have added turbochargers or
superchargers to their cars.

If you use Premium in a modern car or truck with EFI, the computer
can sense it (knock sensor) and advance the ignition timing a few
degrees, but you won't be able to tell the performance difference in
everyday driving. You will pick up something under one horsepower,
which might get you to the top of a steep hill a quarter second faster
- big whoop. Save your money.

I think more then that. When pulling a long grade in my '93 3L, I notice
it start to knock and ping, then it will stop with a
noticeable power drop. That's running the cheap stuff.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I have a 2005 Tacoma 2.7L VVT and have tried all 3 grades of gasoline. It
does run fine on 87, however, I do notice more power with 89, but no
advantage with 93 over 89. I also have a 2000 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5L VTEC and
notice quite a large difference in performance with 93 over 87 octane,
however, it does run fine on 87. Honda advertised a 5-10 horsepower increase
with premium fuel.

I stand corrected thanks Ken, I keep forgetting that I also own a 68 Vw Bug
and that does get spark knock from regular gas or if it isn't tweeked just
right, got to run premium in that baby ,no electronic gobble e goop on that
car.

Modern closed loop engines have high compression and really need more than 87 octane to do their best, The vehicals ECM will try to let you run low octane fuel by retarding the spark to control knock but when it does this it is also reducing power output and MPG too. Give the price of fuel these days and that even plus is only 3 or 4 % more than regular it is kinda silly not to use better fuel because it may actually be cheaper to use it because of increased engine efficency, especailly in hot weather.
