Post subject: Truck automatic trans

In the corner of a friend's tranny shop is a Detroit Gear tranny with
an emergency brake band on it. He says it came out of a Stude truck
and he rebuilt it long ago but the owner never came back. Did Stude
trucks ever use the DG trans? He is getting ready to retire and has
offered it to me for a couple hundred bucks, which is what he says he
had in it years ago.

I don't know whether it could be adapted to later trucks or not, but it is a
pretty good tranny- first gear start, very heavy duty and lock-up converter
in high.

Something that I was wondering about, My plans was to haul the Sky Hawk to
Omaha (I hope) using the Transtar which right now has a 259 with a T-86 3
speed with over drive transmission in it and using the low elevation route.
Would it be better to use some other transmission. . . should I not worry
about it because I already have too much on my plate just trying to get the
Sky Hawk done. Still wonder what would be the best and still keep the all
Studebaker power drivetrain.

in talking with a very old transmission fellow the subject of studes &
DGs came up. he told me that they were also used in Divco Milk Trucks
and Jags.
