I know you guys look at regular cars as parts-to-be-used-elsewhere!

I need some education on the more recent (Um.. 1980 on, maybe)
families of transverse-engine / transaxle cars. I know a little about
the early 90's GM units.

I'm particularly interested in the units that mount on a sub-frame or
"Clip".

Can you point to a quick survey of typical model series from Chrysler,
Toyota, Honda, and Ford?? Only interested in the drive train...

Why?? I am going to work on an approach to use this type of engine
and drive train in DIY Marine applications. I have built a couple of
power boats with V-8 engines, and converted auto transmissions, or (in
the last one) a "Vee-Drive". I DO know about all the "Pitfalls" of
Auto-VS-Marine engines, derating, etc etc.

The basic idea is to lock up the differential and drive a propeller
shaft or outdrive unit from one axle with its CV joints intact. I know
you need thrust bearings etc etc.

TWO units positioned opposite ends out give two counter-rotating
shafts for a two-engine boat.

Maybe.

Can you help me learn about the different families of cars with this
configuration?? Sorry, I've had more conventional old cars and
trucks!

Any suggestions, pointers appreciated. Any other group to ask??

Vernmont

I Know alot about cars,design, build,modify,performance,engines
,diferant swaps lots of information, and i have resorces to the parts
,CaLifonia,,, Hobby ,custom,bikes motorcyclestt
too,i know many ways and prices in building ,.
Gm the subframe in camaros, are popular,
there are many ways to build from what you want ?too what is available
low$$ interchangability build it in systems complete any manufacturer
will fit anything depending on your skil and tools and space.
transverse?Im not too familiar with term,or its not ringing any
bells, unless your talking rear mount engines, front wheel drives, front
wheel drive v-8 cadilac put in rear of another car i thought of doing
it,..
I cant wait to build my prototype ,its great ,And possible a industrial
standard for future car market ,
frame design, engine disign. i stoped for a while but hopefully i get
back to it. Oh just passing through looking for inspiration and
motivation,
My love of cars not all but lots anyways

Thanks, Mike. I'm looking for the typical Front Engine Front Wheel
Drive setup where the whole package is 'sideways' and the axles/CV
joints go out to the two front wheels.

How about GM (I've worked on Buick/Olds early 90's) VS Ford or
Chrysler products??

The answer you want is based on how much power you want from the
engines.

Toyota has A/T transverse engined car with four, six and eight
cylinder engines in it's Toyota and Lexus line since the early 1990s.

Honda, Nissan [Infinity], Mitsubishi, Mazda make A/T transverse
engined car with four and six cylinder engines.

Ford and GM make A/T transverse engined car with four, six and eight
cylinder engines.

Chrysler make A/T transverse engined car with four and six cylinder
engines. I'm not sure about transverse eights.

You can probably put the most power through the American transmissions
most inexpensively and with the least problems.

GM is probably the best for availability of parts and price.

I believe the latest Impala SS had a transverse V8, but it's a power
on demand engine so it doesn't run on all cylinders all the time. At
max, it puts out 303 hp.

However, they would be expensive to buy new and difficult to find
junkyard used and probably still expensive.

You'd probably be better off finding used 3800/3.8 V6s from mid and
large sized GM models and slightly hotrod them. You'd probably be able
to get them near 300hp for a lot less money.

In addition, there are conversion kits that allow you to connect Chevy
small blocks to Pontiac Fiero transmissions.

Eric, Thanks! The V6's look pretty good; I will look thru some manuals
for those years/engines.
I think I need to buy a typical one and tear it down to understand it
better...
