After a death in the family, friend came into town and drove up in their
Toyota Prius hybrid.

The lady got out of the car praising it.

60 mpg... Good ride, responsive.

There were nearly 400,000 hybrids sold last year, mostly Toyotas.

GM, you have a challenge. You have been given money to offset you
irresponsible behavior.

If you are any kind of company, compete. If not, die.

The ones that live in the trailer park?

I dont know what GM should do.. They have very obviously done the wrong
thing up to
now.

If they want to continue to trust the pickup and SUV market, then get it
on... And if they
fail, dont ask for more money.

If I were once again being paid multi hundreds of thousands of dollars per
year, I would
feverishly be looking for an answer to the problem. I am, however, retired,
so GM
gurus can work their fingers to the bonee.

I would not buy a GM item at any price in today's market.

I might consider a Ford.. They apparently have some leadership.

So what should Toyota do? There losing money too.

Give the auto industry 10 more years of depressed economy
and anyone buying a new car will be buying a Chinese one
at Wallmart.

Look at what happened to the electronics industry. remember
RCA,Zenith,Motorola,GE the American made giants of the industry?
Where are ALL those names made today for the most part?
Not in the USA. Look for the US auto industry to do the same
without radical changes to there labor cost structure.
The UAW may be standing its ground, but it will have won the war
and lost the battle standing on the rubble of the US car industry.

Anyone that thinks electric cars can be built today and last
forever economically are on drugs too. Whats the longest you have had
a cell phone battery or laptop maintain its full capacity?
Or hand held drill for that matter. Until there is a radical shift
in battery technology, were stuck with expensive batteries that wont
last forever. In 5 to 10 years when the car is out of warranty and the
battery pack cost 2 to 5 times more than the car is worth, what savings
is that? A lot a good looking junk cars in the scrap yard
for nothing.

I have to give ford credit. There new hybrid fusion looks good on paper
and tentatively affordable (unlike the neat but over priced volt)
Time will tell. Imagine the look of surprise when you pull into that
quick lube store for a oil change on that hybrid and told you need
the $5000 battery pack to go. Or the deluxe monster cable battery
pack for $6500 with the gold ends.

Excuse me while i change the rechargeable NiMH cells on my sarcasm meter...

That's a bit more praise than I've heard for the Prius prior to this.
Better mileage than I've ever heard, and certainly better praise for the
ride and responsiveness than I've experienced myself, just riding in them.

That said - why jump on GM with this post like that? Why not come down on
every other manufacturer that does not equal these claims for the Prius?

I have seen several Prius Hybrids in the local paper for sale. Could it

Yes, they are.. This is the first time in 50 years that they are losing
money.

We are losing money in the stock market, for the first time in 50 years.. We
plan, personally, to spend and invest carefully, not to panic, and to study
the
trends of the market.. This could be a good strategy for the car makers
too.

Well said, Mike..

I dont know that Toyota is going in the right direction. Honda is in a
similar market
strategy. We are in a world crisis, and it isnt just in automobiles...It
is widespread,
pervasive.

The actual size of the market in the USA, and probably worldwide, has
decreased
sharply because people are scared and discretionary buying is down. There
are still just as many people as before but their buying habits have
changed.

The Big 3 American manufacturers, not just GM, are the topics of the
bailout,
although Ford apparently strengthened its market position rather
dramatically.
A few years ago, brokerage analysts said Ford was a sure goner. It didnt
happen, yet. Maybe Ford management did a better job than Chrysler and
GM.. Remains to be seen.

I dont get any clear idea about what these companies are planning to do
to improve their lot..

I hope that when Obama takes over we will see a shift toward a more
stable economy. I didnt want him, but he is all we have and we have to make
it work.

Could be.. My son owns two Honda hybrids, a Civic and an Insight..
Neither have had battery problems, and they are both now several years
old.

Breakthroughs in battery technology have been slow to come, at least,
to a level where hybrid vehicles could be considered to be "perfected".

I wouldnt buy one, but my age has tempered my enthusiasm for things
of this sort. I want good solid dependable transportation, but at present
my need for fuel economy can be met with current technology.

You mean like Toyota? Pruis sales are DOWN, not up. Last week I posted
that Toyota would be operating in the RED, as well, in the first quarter.
Now it appears they operated in the red the last quarter of 08.

Over 50% of Toyotas annual earnings come for the US and Toyotas last sales
report showed a sales DECLINE greater than Ford. LOL

Didn't you LISTEN to what he was saying doing the campaign? If he does

Ford didn't have very much farther to fall. You can't get lower than
zero... So, your post only helps highlight how pathetic 'merican cars
are..

Holy cow - you really enjoy displaying your ignorance, don't you? You
might want to try learning a bit about the things you comment on. You
won't look quite so foolish.
