I've got a 1988 VW Fox that has failed the e-test twice due to high NOx
reading.
It has 228000km. No one can tell me what is causing it, other than to spend
money for engine analysis and other bs like that.

Any suggestions?

No one can look into a crystal ball and tell you what's wrong without first
knowing the condition the car is in? In our part of the state(USA) we don't
check NOx but I would first check the engine tune such as timing, fuel
mixture, cat converter! Does it have a EGR system and is it working. EGR
controls NOx levels. Lastly if you don't want to spend some $$$ on diagnosis
you can just start throwing parts at the car and hope!

High NOx is usually caused by timing being off or running too hot
(or both). Check the ignition and valve timing 1st. Get that
right and re-test. If still not passing replace thermostat and flush
radiator.

Check out tdiclub.com & look under the VAG-COM link to do a search for
club members that have the diag tools to check it out. The guy I
contactred is running my codes for a case of beer.

Ross-Teck (www search) sells the cable for about $200 & the software is
DLable as shareware.

Well I had the same problem with my 88 fox I was told to change the
"catolic" convertor cost $100 in L.A.
gave it big tune up and thank I passed good for 2 years now.
Have problems starting in morning I have to pump gaspedal couple times and
it feels like startermotor hangs up but when the car is warm no further
problems.
P.S. I disconnected the start injectors flooded the car.

Check Engine Light is on - how urgent? - I actually did a Google search on this first... Anyhow; I have a 2000 Golf 1.8 with 42,000 miles on it. Last month I had the 40,000 mile maintenance done. My reward for that was having the check engine light come on today. The car is running normally....
