I just got another package of cheap TWs... this was advertised as a set
from 1978 with two issues missing and two november issues.
well, that's exactly what I got, but the two november issues are
different....? can anyone enlighten me? One is Vol.10 No.3 and one is
Vol.10 No.11? My math shows that Vol.10 No.3 should have been March
'78, which I did NOT receive, is it possible that there was a major
cover design boo boo?
puzzled,

the mid-1980
IIRC.
The newsrack for March was different from the subscription one, either
a month early or a month late.

I think I just answered my question, there are some ads in Vol.10 No.3
for meets in May and June of '78. So I am assuming that this is really
the March issue and the cover just says November for some reason...?
still scratching my head,

No, I refuse to start another collection of ANYTHING. Well, except
maybe painfully beautiful girlfriends, but I haven't had much luck with
that lately.
The only reason I even bother with TW is a) the Co-Operator is the
shiznit and b) JP got me started with a box of old issues from the trunk
of a project car, so right now I've probably got something on the order
of 30-40% of all the issues printed (in varying conditions, but I
consider it more of a reference shelf than an actual collection) so
there's an end in sight.

Yes, there WAS a boo-boo. It was supposed to be the March issue of that
year. Is that the one that has the reprint of the Sept. 1946 Life magazine
article of the 1947 Studes on the assembly line?
I remember several months later in TW a note was made of the error.

Thanks, I did have that issue, but that would have been only a couple
months after I bought my first Stude, so collecting magazines was about
the farthest thing from my mind (it's amazing I haven't lost any issues,
really...)

How do you guys remember this stuff off the top of your head...?

I believe there is an index now online on the SDC web site, it's
sitting safely on my hard drive at home. Or are these other ones that
you refer to more complete?

About 25 years ago I started a card file system of what I thought was
relevant information. 'course it's about 10 years behind right now, so I
started buying the Jan Young indexes (and I highly recommend them). At the
very least a guy should be able to get to a TW issue with an index in it. I

I guess it's time for my yearly pitch for "The Best of Turning Wheels
books". How many of you would buy a book with reprints of all the model
specific articles that were printed over the years ? Say, a prewar book,
a 47-52 book, a 53-60, and a 61-66 ? I think they would sell like pop
corn. <g>

I'd rather see someone do book binding of the year's issues... but that's
probably cost prohibitive.
The problem with the Best of books, is who's to say what's best of... if
you're interested in Hawks you're probably not going to want to read a bunch
on Larks or vise-versa.

I forgot about the on-line edition. It is very good. It covers major
articles. The TW version covers that and some smaller stuff too. I don't
see any entries past 2000 in either version. There was also a tech articles
index printed in Jan 1983. It's good, but way out of date now.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: OK you old TW collectors |

Once, many years ago, I stopped to eat in Pennsylvania while driving my '53
Starliner to an SDC International Convention. When I came out, a family was
looking at my car. I learned that the older gentleman had worked for the
advertising agency that Studebaker used in the '40s. I mentioned "First by Far
With a Postwar Car." He was flabbergasted. He didn't think anyone remembered
that anymore. It turns out that he was the one that came up with that slogan.
The tie-in with this thread is that he later sent me his personal copy of that
Life magazine article on the production of '47 Studebakers. I passed the
contact information on to Fred K. Fox thinking that an article could be
developed. When Fred tried to contact the man, he learned that the man was
recently deceased.

SDC has considered this a number of times. The stumbling block is the
Copyright of materials via various authors. Some authors say that they are
coming up with a book of their own and don't want SDC to come up with a book
first. Of course, their books haven't come out.
