Post subject: Strut Assembly question?
Archived from groups: rec>autos>makers>vw>watercooled (more info?)

I have a 1984 Rabbit GTI

Two questions, is there a washer required under the big nut at the top of
the strut shaft.

Is there another washer ( smaller then the washer above) that goes at the
bottom of the threads of the strut shaft. This is the location on the
bottom side of the strut mount/bearing where the threads end?

thanks

The Bentley shows a big washer under the top nut. A new rubber bumper
and dust cap on the polished shaft. A smaller washer on the turned
down section of the struft shaft that is partially threaded on the
strut shaft. Then the spring cap, upper bearing, big washer and nut.

Not putting a new bumper and dust cover will often lead to premature
strut blowout. Also new strut bearings are recommended whenever you do
new struts.
