Is there a procedure for fixing the steering column clunk on and 2004
Silverado some place that I can download? I did this procedure on my 2001
Bonneville and would like to do it to my truck.

I haven't heard "the clunk" yet on my '06 Avalanche, but I'm expecting it
soon. I just passed 40K this week.

The only "fix" is to replace the intermediate shaft with the redesigned one.

I've been told that the "redesigned" one will still fail. Can
anyone confirm or deny?

Mine has had no issue since it was replaced.

My '01 Blazer does this, too. Is there a safety concern here or will
just living with it only be an annoyance?

Thanks,

I don't know if Troy was planning on answering, but I've heard that it will
still fail. It is a minor issue and may come up from time to time. The fix
is - as I mentioned earlier - to lube the assembly.

Well, again I will state since installing the final redesigned shaft that I
have had no issues in 25k miles. No one that I know of has had the
redesigned shaft fail either. Also, my dealer replaced it for free out of
warranty.

So, the "redesigned" part does no better than the original? Just
wondering if I should grease the one I have or spend money on the
new one.

I tried to get it replaced, but they wouldn't. I know of two
people who have the "new" one, but the clunk reappeared.

The GMT900 trucks have rack and pinion steering. The design was completely
changed.

I think we are talking about the steering 'slip/sliding joint' necessary

necessary for barrier crash/crush performance on light trucks.

Actually, I was referring to the fact that the GMT 800 trucks like mine use
a reciculating ball design
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recirculating_ball) whereas the GMT 900
series use Rack and Pinion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rack_and_pinion).
From what I understand (on the Avalanche groups) is that the steering shaft
clunk comes from a design - erm - feature on the older model that is no
longer present.

40,500 miles and no clunk so far.
