Post subject: Spark Leads

What is the easiest way to replace the spark leads in the ED. Do i
need to take the fuel rail off or the whole inlet manifold to gain
excess? What i thought was going to be an easy job just got
difficult!!!

I had an EF that i replaced the leads on & found it a bit of a
challenge as well. If the fuel injection system is the same, I removed
the plastic air intake pipe & got better access to the leads. then
only removed one lead at a time & replaced.(can be very tricky). small
hands & patience helps a lot. If you have already taken all the leads
off the coils should be numbered 1-6. 1 being the front cylinder.
these numbers can be seen with a torch and some acrobatics. I am
assuming the engine set up is similar to an ef which was very
difficult to reach but patience,perseverence and a few donations of
skin should get you there. taking the fuel rail or intake manifold off
could result in gasket leaks resulting in reduced performance. good

You mean you have lost the trained octopus that Ford supplied to
do this job?

The ED has a different inlet manifold to EF and distributor
rather than a coil pack. You need to remove air cleaner duct
and use long nose pliers with a slight bend (K Mart have them)
to remove and replace the leads. Tape or use a rubber band to
hold the leads together temporarily to thread them through the
gap in the inlet manifold. Or get a wife or girl friend with
small hands and long thin arms who isn't adverse to breaking
fingernails. But the trained octopus works best Wink

Thanks for the advice. Ive asked at Super Cheep, but they ony have the
cheeper trained Squid.... and Ford say the octopus are no longer
trained for that model..typical!! LOL
Ill have a go with long nose pliers and see how i go.

Ok Spark leads changed...im sure they are in the right place but still
running like a victor lawn mower and using HEAPS of fuel...any ideas
where to now?

but have you done anything to the car that might have initiated
this - changed or fixed anything else? Check for vacuum leaks at
the inlet manifold (list with a rubber tube with engine
running - one end in ear one above and below manifold along
entire length though leaks are usually at the font and rear)
Haven't changed a head gasket and fitted a CFI inlet manifold
instead of a MPFEI inlet gasket?

Have you tried the self diagnosis checks - get any error codes?

How long since you changes the fuel and air filter?
