Although not a seriously dominant car, the Black Magic Vega F/C was
always a crowd favorite wherever it appeared, and in my personal opinion
it was one of the best looking funnies ever. One of the biggest selling
- and probably most remembered - issues of SS & DI magazine featured a
great cover shot of The Black Magic doing an amazing fire burnout.

May R. C. Rest in Peace.

I remember watching him at the Empire Nationals in 1989 or 1990 when I was a
little kid. He drove the Raybestos Funny Car and being a stupid little kid,
I became a fan of his just because I liked saying his name.

Caught me by surprise I live ten minutes from his body shop. RIP R.C. I

Matt,

R.C. did have a cool sounding name, didn't he? Particularly for a F/C
driver... I personally liked the name Black Magic too. I miss the days
when everybody's car (usually) had a cool name.

Whatever the reason you became a fan of R.C.'s, it was important to you
and that's what matters. Who can say why any of us become fans of a
driver or car or team? Ultimately, it's a love of the sport at the root
of it all.

What some people often forget is that regardless of the sport in
question, The Fans are what keep it alive. No Fans = No Sport.
Everything else is dependent on that simple truth.

One that comes to mind over here in Australia was the "Mexican Mustang".

Graham Cowins (Andrew Cowins dad and former Crew Cheif) old car was called
"Syndicate". It set a number of FC records in Australia back in the 80's
including the first FC to run a sub 6 second pass.

Dang, you're right!! In fact Fred Sibley who lives in
Elkhart, IN. which is just south of here had two Allison 16
cylinder aircraft engines he traded to Art for the original
Green Monster. It was getting pretty ragged by then. I guess
Art needed the engines. Fred ran it at a local drag strip in
about '61 and it went 168 mph. I don't remember the ET.

Do I get a cigar now? LOL

Eddie Hill had one with two Pontiacs tipped to each side.

There was someone else also that ran four slicks in the back but not
all the way across like Hill's. They were kind of staggered in tandem.
Hill's car kind of worked. This other one didn't.

Remember TV Tommy Ivo and his four Buick engined dragster,
with a slick on all four corners? He had to know that
wouldn't work. It looked cool though.

In those days, they really didn't know if something would work. That's
why you would see things that were a little different.

TV Tommy's four engined car lasted a long time even though it didn't
work. It eventually grew a station-wagon body and became a funny car.
Didn't work too well but all that smoke and noise sure was popular.
