Post subject: Shell Valley Cobra Kit
Archived from groups: alt>autos>kitcars (more info?)

I'm new to kit cars, I'd appreciate any advice I could get.
I have an opportunity to buy a shell valley 65 cobra kit. The kit was
originally bought in 1987.
I've searched the newsgroup's and see shell valley show up quite a bit,
mostly sounds OK. Does anyone have an openion on these kits? I'm 6'1",
is this a kit I could fit into?
How about price? I haven't seen it yet but as described it's a rolling
chassis. It also has a complete / ready to go 302, trans, and rear end.
Everthing else is in boxes, should mostly be there, but it's been in
this state for 10 yrs. I would assume some things are missing by now.
The asking price is $13K. Does this sound reasonable?
Anything you could add would be helpfull,
Thanks,
Jerry

In stock form you will be very disappointed in the fit. I'm 5'11' and
am very uncomfortable in any stock wheelbase Cobra or replica thereof.

The Shell Valley kit is the bottom feeder among established
manufacturers-you have to do all the work and then some. However a good
car can be built from a SV kit. You will be a crunch fit however.

There is no getting around the fact that the Cobra is a very small car
and was designed around 5'6" drivers.

IMO the Cobra industry should standardize on a six to eight inch
stretch. This would make modern drivers more comfortable and provide
better stability inasmuch as people are putting stupid amounts of power
in these cars.

The price is very good for what you are getting. I sold a complete Cobra for
$14,000 last year but it was in terrible shape and required a total major
rebuild or everything possible. It was the lowest price running Cobra to be
sold on ebay. A complete running Cobra usually goes for an absolute minimum
of $20,000+ depending on condition and running gear.

LIke the other poster mentioned, Cobras are made for small men. I'm a skinny
5'11" and I just nicely fit into the Cobra. The guy who bought it was about
your height it was physical gymnastics to get in. The problem is the small
doors and the distance between the seat, dash and steering wheel. Can't get
your knees to slide past.

Sometimes you can move the seat back as far as it could go or go to a racing
style seat. I believe there was a little room still available on the one I
sold.

On another point, it was an automatic car and there was just enough room
between the firewall and door for a brake pedal and gas pedal - no other
place to put your feet.

Putting a clutch pedal in would be major surgery.

Expect that it is going to take you way 4x more time and money then you can
possibly imagine to finish it.

On the other hand, everytime you will drive it, you will be constantly waved
at. When the new owner drove it home, every car that passed him or he
passed, waved to him - he said he felt like he was in a parade! Great
attention getter and vehicle.
