I have a "security" lite in my dash that goes on periodically. The
manual
states this has something to do with automatic security door locks,
or
something to that effect. A feature I do not have. It has come on
here and
there for the past year, doesn't effect anything. Should I assume it
is
just a dummy lite and ignore it? |

No. If the light comes on, then you *have* whatever feature is represented
by it. Check your window sticker if you've got it, or go to a dealership
with your VIN to get a detailed list of what was on your vehicle when it was
made.
This system--as it is implemented on any GM vehicle I've ever seen--is a
basic "vehicle contents security system" that will go off if you lock the
vehicle (using the power lock button or a remote key fob lock button) and
then unlock a door using the manual lever in the door. You can test this by
rolling down the windows on your vehicle, locking the doors with the power
locks, shutting the doors, and waiting about a minute. Manually unlock a
door from the inside, open it from the outside and the vehicle should
reprimand you by sounding the horn repeatedly.
Start the vehicle with the key OR press the unlock button on the fob to make
it quiet again.
The light can also be used as fault indicator for the PASSLOCK system built
into your vehicle. This system is supposed to check your key (it's an
electrical resistance check so far as I know) to make sure it is the right
one for your vehicle before it will enable to fuel delivery and spark
systems. I'm not sure how closely it's policed--my '03 S-10 supposedly has
this system (it definitely has the alarm part described above) and yet it
doesn't mind my using a $1 key copy in place of the factory key.

Year, make and model? I had to have the BCM replaced on my 2002 Impala LS to
resolve this. Pulling the codes to see what the specific error is would be a
first step. Having the BCM replaced is not the first step in resolving the

I've had this truck since it was new 9 years ago. I live in the country and
I never use the power locks, I never lock the doors. It never did this
until this past year and just randomly. Security will light up after I've
been driving awhile. It might turn off while I"m driving, or it will be
gone the next time I start it. So I'm led to believe it is a dummy light
activating for whatever reason. By the way, 2000 Blazer. >> Stay informed about: Security light in dash going on |

It has nothing to do with your power door locks or locking the door. It has
to do with the passlock system built in to the vehicles on-board computer
(the ECM and BCM are part of this Passlock system, and so is the igninition
cylinder and it's tumblers which wear out over time and can be one cause of
this). It's worth getting looked at because the passlock system has the
ability to disable the vehicle when malfunctioning...... >> Stay informed about: Security light in dash going on |

Probably a bad ignition switch. They have a nasty habit of causing this.
You should get it looked at since it could disable the vehicle.

I would like to add that this is a major problem your looking at. Don't play around and hope it gets better.
Your KEY has a little resistor in it that tells the security system that "you are who you say you are".
Like Steve said, if the computer can't read your key, it will disable the car, and you wont be able to start
it until you get it fixed. I just replaced an ignition switch in a 96 camero. You will have to take your key down
to the Chevy dealer so that you can get an ignition switch with matching keys & resistors for your security system.
You will need special (but cheap) tools to replace one yourself. It's not an easy job if you haven't done it
before. Not sure what it would cost at the dealer, but DON'T play around with this, or you will be looking
for ride home, and an expensive tow & repair bill. 99% of the time, the wires from the ignition switch get
chaffed and start to ground out, or break. They are really tiny.

Nope. Her 2000 Blazer uses 'Passlock' not 'passkey.'

The computer doesn't "read the key" and if a no start occurs due to a
passlock failure, the engine can be started by waiting for the system
time out.

Which strangely, is not a 2000 Blazer.

Nope, the wires to the ignition switch are not tiny at all.

I'm the OP of this topic. Went to my chevy dealer and they said the remote
starter on it made the ignition switch go bad (after 2 years). Well, that
was what was causing the Security light to come on once in a while over a
long period of time, the dealership said it was coding like someone was
trying to hotwire the truck. Had the ignition switch replaced ($342) but
they would not reattach the remote starter (would not warranty the switch).
They said I'm free to go back to where I got the remote starter and have it
rewired, and that I may or may not have the same problem "2 or 3 years down
the road again". I'm thinking of going back to have it rewired (might cost
up to $100). I live in northern Wisconsin and have no garage, I really want
that starter luxury. I'm wondering what would make the remote starter make
the ignition switch start to go bad, and for it to take 2-3 years? >> Stay informed about: Security light in dash going on |

Hey Chris... Sorry for the 342.00... but the remote starter didn't have anything to
do with it. They are right though about the "hot wiring" The remote starter has to
bypass the security system (in some cases) for it to work (start the car) like in
a pass-key system. Not sure about the other system (no experience).
Don't worry about the starter switch. But ask your remote starter guys if
they have to wire something into it, and how they bypass the sec. system.
