If you move out of Washington and have a legal address in another state then
come to Washington to buy a vehicle you will *not* pay sales tax when you
buy in WA. You will pay sales tax in the state you register in when you
license your truck. If you move to a state with sales tax and drive to
Oregon to buy your truck you will pay sales tax when you license your truck
in the state you live in. If you move to Oregon and have a legal address in
Oregon then drive acrosss the river to WA and buy your truck you will pay no
sales tax in Wa because you are from a state that has no sales tax and for
the purpose of reporting that sale the dealer will place that amount on page
2 of his sales tax report on the line listed as "Qualified Nonresident
Sales".
You have not researched the laws closely enough.

Here's a related question - I was given a 97 Ranger out of Oregon and
went to try to register it here in WA yesterday. The 'nice lady' at
the license agency said without something to verify the sale price or
in this case the lack of one, I would be charged tax based on market
value. (Then, of course, she showed me a NADA book listing that was
a lot higher than what I found on KBB) D'oh! I will for sure get the
statement of this being a gift, (it really was) Screw paying sales
tax!

I doubt it will matter that you received it for free. The WA tax people WILL
assign a fair market value and levy tax accordingly. They _might_ accept a
lower value based on a free "gift" receipt, but you will pay close to FMV.
Come back and tell us after you check again.

Some states will tax you on the market value of a vehicle given as a gift.
This is partially so folks won't try to skirt taxes by saying a car was a
gift when it really wasn't.

I think you have not researched the laws closely enough. Maybe you should
call a tax office or the DOR for accurate information.

I did not state that you would get a sales tax exclusion in WA, you won't.
Lets say you're moving to Idaho. If you drive into WA and buy a car you will
not pay WA sales tax on the vehicle. You will have to buy a trip permit to
get your rig to your state. When you go to the appropriate agency in the
state you live in you will pay sales tax there. That's the way it works.
Period. Call the agency like I did.
If you drive into WA from Idaho and buy a washing machine, or building
materials or darn near anything else, you will pay sales tax. Period.
If you drive into WA from NV and buy a car, truck, RV of any kind you will
not pay WA sales tax. When you take the rig to your home state (NV) to
license it you will pay sales tax in your home state. That's just the way it
works. You cannot avoid sales tax just by driving to OR, you will have to
register the vehicle when you get home and that's where will pay the tax.
If, as you state on your caustic reply to Ralph that the sales tax in your
new state is 3% that is what you will pay when you take the rig home. Don't
believe me, call the DOR at 1-800-647-7706 like I did.

Why don't you call the damn state office. I gave you the number.

10 years ago I gave my brother a car worth at least $5K. He didn't have
to pay a sales tax then. The King County employee acted like they
didn't believe that it was a gift, but since they couldn't prove otherwise
they accepted it. I went with my brother to transfer the title. I think they
said that you can't gift the car more than once. By the way, I didn't lie,
it really was a gift. I don't know if the rules are the same under todays law.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Oregon Ford Truck Dealer Recommendation |

Washington's web page does not clearly explain one important thing:
The merchant has two choices:
1. Charge sales tax.
2. Document that the purchaser is from a tax-exempted state, not collect the
sales tax, and maintain documentation of the tax-free sale with a copy of
the ID of the purchaser.
Repeating: It is the merchant's choice.
My choice when I was a merchant in Washington: You help make the potholes;
you can pay the sales tax.
Only two entities are entitled by law to purchase items sales-tax-free in
Washington. They are the American Red Cross and the United States
Government (when the government is directly paying for the goods;
reimbursable purchases don't count).

Sounds like your research is different than my research. I've walked into
dealerships and they've all told me that they would have to charge me
sales tax. I go to the WA state web site and they list the 6 states whose
residents don't have to pay sales tax in WA and my future state is not

published by the state is wrong and that dealers are wrong, and someone

I gotta go with Bob's take on this issue as the items he's outlined
have also been my experience. If you really want to avoid paying sales
tax, "move" to OR for a day, get a PO Box and an OR driver's license,
buy your truck, register/license it in OR. When you move to your new
state simply transfer the OR title and get a new driver's license.
There is probably even a grace period before you are required to have
a valid driver's license and registration in your "new" state. Even
with the added, extraneous expense of registration/DL in OR I bet you
come out ahead.
BTW, in May when I was shopping for a new truck, I found one in Utah
that fit my requirements (I'm in Idaho). While talking with the
salesman I asked about the sales tax issue. He referred me to the
finance manager who said, "No problem, we'll just forward the purchase
information to the DMV in Boise, they will collect the sales tax when
you register the vehicle..."

Our problem at Vancouve Ford (and my friends) may have been a
particular salesperson(s). In my case, the salesman would NOT stop
calling my home even after we bought elsewhere! (I know, I know, I'll
never give my number out again!)

That's just plain rude. Although I don't mind my salesman calling to make
sure everything is okay.

Landmark Ford, Tigard, OR. 503 639 1131 They have to be one of the
best. Have bought two [new, stock] from them and would have bought a
third [used] but didn't have what I wanted. I also give them all of
my service work and don't have a gripe about it. The salesman name is
Tom Rayner. Gives it to you straight with no bull.
Stay away from Thomason/Damerow or what ever their name is now. How
they stay in business is past me.
Also have heard good things about Canby Ford.
Good Luck
