I have a small vane type power steering pump from a Mazda that had a
remote reservoir. How possible is it to use that pump for a water pump for
the intercooler? Seems quite plausible to me, providing I run pump
lubricant (for water pumps) with the coolant. I haven't messed with the
regulator, but that shouldn't be too difficult to bring the pressure down,
and as long as I control any restrictions I can control the pressure.
The vanes and all pump internals are metal, except the seals, of course.
Following that idea, if I were to pressurize the "hot" side of the
system and make the intercooler the low pressure side, just like an air
conditioning system, then wouldn't the efficiency improve? Water doesn't
compress or vaporize in this system, but the basic concept is the same.
Boyle's law still applies, but to make this work, it seems that the pressure
ought to be pretty high because of the low compressibility of water,
something the pump is capable of (usually somewhere around 1000psi.)
