My wife took her 2000 Lincoln Continental (95,000 miles) to the Ford
dealer for a routine oil change. They also replaced a dirty air filter.
Since then, the RPM's seem to be erratic...especially while idling. The
engine speed seems to fluctuate up and down, and it appears to be idling
fast. Is it possible the mechanic disconnected a sensor by mistake? This
happened once before when they forgot to reconnect one of the engine sensors,
and the engine ran rough. Any idea what could be the culprit this time?

Thanks!
Scott

Dirty throttle body
dirty idle air motor pintle
disconnected wire or vacuum hose

Putting in a new air filter likely disturbed some dirt and it needs to
be 'washed ' out with throttle body cleaner or other product. Check
around the air cleaner can for disconnected wires and vacuum lines.

Cselby,

Thanks for your input. I looked closer under the hood, and I discoverd that
after replacing the air filter, the mechanic did not reconnect the housing
that channels the air from the filter to the engine, so outside air was getting
sucked in, which threw off the engine sensors. The problem was quickly corrected,
and the service manager promised the mechanic would be told that he should always
finish the job.

Thanks again!
Scott

That's gratitude for ya ..... he was just trying to get your new air filter
to last longer.
