Mike, I tried to send this to you by private email but would not go. Ted

<<Hi Mike,

I emailed a friend that knows these trans pretty well. Below is what he has to
say. Hope it helps.

Ted

<<Ted:

It is quite likely the input shafts are the same. BW used a 17 spline input in
the earliest FOM, and some of the later ones used in low HP applications, such
as 6 cylinder cars. Later, they used the 29 spline shafts in all FOM, actually
Cruisomatics. If he is going to put a 17 spline FOM in his Hawk, he won't gain
anything except availability. I assume he is looking for a 1st gear start,
which won't happen with the early FOM. He'll need to upgrade to a Cruiso for
that, and that will require an input shaft switch. If he uses a late '56 or
later FOM, he'll get a 1st gear start when he floors the accelerator only.
Otherwise it takes off in 2nd. Hope this is understandable and helps.

Hi John,

I was going to answer this guy saying the input shafts are different as well as
the valve body but don't quite understand how what he is saying can be. Any
answers?

Ted

<<I am still really confused about the Ford o Matic vs the Flight o Matic Borg
Warner Automatic transmissions. I posted a picture of two transmission side by
side last week One is a Ford O and the other a Flight O. I have always been led
to believe the input shafts would be different. On these two they are
identical. Matter of fact the transmissions are identical exept one has a Ford
Plate and the other a Studebaker-Packard Plate. and some case number stampings
are different. I thought perhaps someone had already switched the input shafts
so I compared the Ford with one from my brothers 56 T-Bird. Still identical
inputs. The Flight O is out of a 58 Packard HT. But that should not make a
difference. Has anyone ever actually tried to put a Ford B/W in a Stude and
found they had to change the shaft? I can't figure out why these shafts would
be identical unless they were made that way. Any ideas?

Thanks, Ted!
I should have known you would have the answer or could get it. The shafts are
definitely identical. It does not really make a difference to me as I have a
Packard Hawk with the HD transmssion. These transmissions are ones we are
trying to get sorted out for a 58 Packard HT my brother is trying to restore. I
was just interested when I noted the identical input shafts.
See Sonny is right! Always someone has the answer. <G>
