Has anyone cut the blue wire to the popup light relay that allows the lights
to drop when you have the side lights on? I want to do it, but am concerned
that I'll burn something out.

I don't recall whether it's the blue wire - but there is a standard cut
to do this. You're advised to put a switch in there, so that if you
actually need the lights to stay up , for example if you are going to
park in snow and they might freeze, you can flip the switch and keep
them up.

Oh yes, insulate the bare bits won't you!
