The post on the Supercharged Vanity got me to thinking: What should the HC/CO
readings be on a Studebaker? It has been over twenty years since I had an old
car (71 Dodge) that had to be emissioned. As I recall the standards were HC
500ppm and CO 5%.

Knowing that todays engines run a lot leaner than the old Stude's are set up
for, what are the standards of states that require emissions? Other than
California, do any other states require refit devices. 1961 was the first year
Studebaker used a PVC valve. Were there any other things added after that.

Bob ,
The New jersey standards for my car are, HC-1400 measured were
1025
CO-8.50 "
4.34
no standard but measured anyway CO2 -10.4
At a recorded RPM of 980
They also look for visible smoke. They don't put the car on the
dynomometer since the car is older model. I am lucky that they didn't
fail me for not having a connector for the OBD computer. My car is now
good to go for 2 more years until the next inspection.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Joe,

Seems like that is a good reading. You are not running to rich and looks like
you are not having a lean misfire with a high HC reading. With todays cats and
O2 sensors plus all the other stuff usually you get a Zero reading on both.

Took my 99 Dodge Dakota in and all they did was plug in under the dash and said
"Past, $12.50"
I gues I should take the 61 over to a shop and get a HC/CO reading to see how
she is doing.
