NBC news is featuring some guy in Tenn. making ethanol out of Kudzu.

For those who don't know the story of Kudzu, it is a 'weed' that grows
wild in the north, but was transplanted to the south with the railroads.
The railroad engineers (not the train drivers) were looking for something
to stop the erosion around the tracks, and also deaden the sound of the
trains as they rumbled by. They realized that they were putting tracks in
the north in areas where there was Kudzu, and it performed well, so they
started planting it in the south.

One problem: it recedes in the wintertime in the north. It just grows all
year long in the south. As they said in the report on NBC, up to 12" a day...

Kudzu has been a real problem in the south. It grows over everything,
crosses roads, brings down power wires, etc.

So here's a solution to three problems. Get rid of Kudzu, gets the onus
off corn for ethanol production, and provides a near never ending source
of fuel.

Sounds like a win-win-win to me.

This is GREAT news if it works out. When we head to Alabama for family
visits, it's absolutely AMAZING the amount of Kudzu we see along the
highways. It seems to cover virtually every mile of highway and hillside in
sight!

"Kudzunol"? Sounds like a new Japanese cough syrup.

Except that it's still cellulosic ethanol. It's possible to make that in
microscopic quantities in the lab, but nobody's anywhere near being able to
go to production with it. The bugs that are needed for large-scale
production simply do not exist.

You'd be better off to burn the stuff and use the heat to boil water and
power turbines. And even that probably wouldn't be economic compared to
burning oil or coal, or even garbage.

Look at this:
http://www.neatorama.com/2008/04/17/houses-covered-in-kudzu/

My favorite sentence:
"In the early 1950s, US Department of Agriculture encouraged farmers to
plant kudzu to reduce soil erosion."

Yet another example of how well the US Government manages the
environment!

The answer to our energy problem is to drill more of our own oil for the
next thirty years or so untill a viable, reasonably priced, readily
available, alternate fuel source is developed. Currently all of the
alternate fuels COMBINED will not meet our current needs, let alone our
future needs. At best they can slow down or need for more imported crude
oil. Gasoline and diesel fuels are far from the only use we have from
crude oil. Anybody who says anything different is being disingenuous at
best, period.

The most abundant fuels we have are natural gas and coal. To use NG we
will need to build thousands of miles of new NG lines to more parts of the
county, just to use what we are currently BUNNING OFF at the well head and
at our refineries because the gas line are full. To take more out of the
ground we will need to build hundreds of thousands more NG lines to bring
the new NG to market. Try getting ANY of THAT passed the environuts.
Hell, we can't even get the new electric transmissions lines built, that the
President ordered three years ago that we NEED to improve the national grid,
let alone all additional lines we will need to get the so call GREEN
electricity Obama is talking about to where it will be needed.

We have 250 years of coal in the ground in the US, much of it could be
converted to diesel fuel, but the environuts are fighting that tooth and
nail as we speak.

Kudzu was introduced in the south from an Asian country. The north
had nothing to do with kudzu.

Kudzu is a plant that reduces alcohol cravings, in humans. But how
many gallons of booze will an acre of Kazoo make?

You don't have the story quite right. Kudzu was actually imported from
Japan. There is a good explanation at http://www.maxshores.com/kudzu/.

At least in NC, it gets cold enough to stop it growing in the winter.
But it doesn't get cold enough to kill the roots, so it comes back as
soon as the weather warms up. I'm lucky, no one near my farm was
stupid enough to let the government plant it. Mostly there are
problems along old railroad tracks cuts and old highway cuts were the
CCC planted it for erosion prevention. The funny thing is, it is lousy
for erosion prevention. If you are diligent, you can kill it with
herbicides. At times it has been promoted as cattle feed, but I don't
know anyone using it for that these days. A couple of years back NPR
had a story about a lady who had sheep that she rented out for Kudzu
control. She would put up a temporary fence around a patch of Kudzu
and the sheep would eat it (I suppose because they had no choice).

I can remember driving through northern Mississippi and southern
Arkansas and seeing miles and miles of the stuff along the road.
Another Government program gone bad.

Probably non-competitive with corn, no matter what NBC thinks.

> Sounds like a win-win-win to me.

After you read up on Kudzu, read up on Johnson Grass and Jimson
Weed...http://www.inhs.uiuc.edu/chf/outreach/VMG/johngrass.html and
http://content.herbalgram.org/abc/herbalgram/articleview.asp?a=2930. I
have to put up with both of these introduced pests. And worst of all,
for me, annual rye grass! The state spreads the stuff along roads
after paving or shoulder work. It spreads like, well like a weed,
along ditch banks, and the road shoulder, and invades my fields. It is
a major problem in oats. Anything that will kill the rye grass will
kill oats as well. Luckily, there are chemicals that will kill rye
grass but not wheat, otherwise it would be a major pain. And don't get
me started on some of the ornamental plants the NC DOT plants along
roadsides - some qualify as noxious weeds according to the USDA.

See my other post. The CCC (i.e., Feds) was heavily involved in the
spread of Kudzu. However, it was first imported into the US as
ornamental.

Well, that's what I saw on the History Channel a few years ago. The
railroad was looking for a way to cut erosion around the tracks and used
Kudzu.
