What's the difference between the single and double action fuel pump?

Is one correct for passenger vs. truck? Is one for an overdrive?

I need to replace the fuel pump in my 1950 tudor business coupe; clues
and advice wanted.

Does anyone have any experience with the retrofit electric fuel pumps?

Thanks.

Double action has a vacuum booster, nice if you still have vacuum wipers.
It is hard on push rods though. If you have converted to 12 volts go with an
electric pump, mount over the rear wheel on the inside of the frame
there is a hole there to mount an AC pump splices into the line with the kit
that comes with the pump. Block off the old pump hole put a half inch rod
with a collar on it to keep from hitting the cam and leave the cover hold it
in place. Some blocks I am told have a hole to lube the push rod so the hole
should be filled. I have run a electric for 15 years with only 1 replacement
somewhere around the 50k mark. I always carry a spare only takes a little
while to change even with cruiser skirts.

A double action fuel pump has the vacuum booster built in also, give
wipers a boost when engine vacuum is low, had one on my 53 and wiper
stayed running under acceleration.
Have used electric fuel pump as a booster, found that with a good
running and tuned up flathead you should not need one. My 35 starts on
the first turn after sitting 2 weeks, doesn't start hard when hot, and
after the winter lay up started after about 15 seconds of cranking,
all of this on a cheap 6V battery that I have never had to charge
since I put it in 2 years ago.

I have no idea if they are still available, but if the die castings for your
existing fuel pump are good, you could buy a kit and rebuild it yourself.
There is not a whole lot to a fuel pump--a housing, a diaphragm and a couple
of valves. Not rocket science.

If your car has been converted to 12 volt, a generic aftermarket electric
fuel pump is a viable alternative. I have used them on a couple of cars,
*not* 1950 Fords, however.

Good luck,
