Is the 2.0 motor in the 99 escort the same basic motor as the 2.0 used in
the focus?

Yes and no. The Focus uses the Zetec "Blacktop" engine and the Escort
uses the earlier Zetec "Silvertop" engine.

The differences are solid lifters as opposed to hydraulic, revised
cambelt routing, shorter pistons and a few other things.
