Question for you all...

I've just acquired a complete and stock '49 8AB engine and transmission that
I plan to clean up, repair and return to running condition. It was removed
from a '49 Woodie after the frame and tailshaft broke in a high center
accident and the vehicle junked many years ago.

The woodie was recently rescued, is being rebuilt and will be Chevy powered
so I bought the Ford's engine, trans, and rear end.

My goal is to repair the tail shaft and return the engine to stock running
condition. The question I have is about the engine's colors, what should
they be?

Here's what I've heard so far...

Block, heads, oil pan, intake manifold, bell housing - Ford red.

Rear end, trans, tail shaft housing, lower rear dust cover - gloss black

Exhaust Manifolds - bare metal(?) Any objections to powder coating them
black or red?

Carb - bare metal

Miscellaneous accessories (air cleaner, brackets, water pumps, etc) - gloss
black.

I'm not looking to do a CCCA level restoration, just back to stock
appearance. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Andy, from the Ford V-8 book.

V-8 ENGINE DETAILING
1949-53
by Cecil Goff

One of the many changes Ford Motor Company made n 1949 was the manner in
which engines were painted. ~rior to 1949 the block and associated parts
were painted adividually, even before machining operations were com, leted.
Starting with the 1949 model year the engines were ~inted after major
assembly. The block, heads, manifolds, raterpumps, front cover, bell
housing, and oil pan were I1 painted as an assembled unit.
The correct engine color for 1949 is somewhat controersiai and there are
probably exceptions to the rule. Reader ~ponses to our call for help in the
V-8 Times clearly show ae most accepted colors for 1949 through 1953 engines
are follows:

YEAR COLOR
1949 -- Blue ('46-48 engine)*
)50-1951 -- Bronze*
)52-1953 -- Orange
}49-1951 Pickup -- Dark Red*
')49-1953 Mercury -- Green

All items that were installed after engine painting were

either natural finish or painted black, and their fasteners were
cadmium-plated. Sales brochures confuse the situation because all show
different color schemes, none of which is exactly correct. The following
items were painted a medium-gloss black:

Oil filler cap and tube Crankcase vent tube and clamp Fan assembly and
pulley Generator, mount and strap Exhaust crossover pipe
Coil and bracket
Plug wire standoffs Thermostat housings** Starter***
Oil filter***
Air cleaner***

* Six-cylinder engines were the same color.

** Photographs from the Kansas City plant clearly show the housings to
be installed after engine painting, and to be black. It is possible that
other engine plants installed these housings prior to engine painting, in
which case the housings and their fasteners would be engine color.

*** These items were engine color in 1950 and 1951 Ford passenger cars,
even though they were installed after engine painting.

Don't ever consider powder coating an exhaust manifold. Powder coating
flows at only 300 degrees, and wouldn't hold up to the heat of an exhaust
manifold for even a few minutes...

Did my exhaust manifolds with Rust-Oleum Bar-B-Q Black about 18 months
ago and they still look like I just painted them. This paint is
supposed to be good to 1000 deg F
