Hi All,
I like to replace 4 spark plugs on my 2000 Corolla. The only concern
that I have is: in the owner manual, it states only using
"iridium-tipped" plug which is very expensive compared with other type
of plug, e.g., platinum. My corolla has already had 120K mile on it, I
don't want to spend too much money, so is it a big problem using other
cheap plug instead?
Thanks.

Don't go cheap if you can avoid it. My '93 has 184K miles on it. If you take
good care of it, you will have it for a lot longer. As hard as you're
driving it, averaging 24K miles or more a year, the good spark plugs are
worth it.

I've seen Toyotas run poorly when using cheap spark plugs so I always
recommend using the Nippon Denso plugs recommended by the factory.

Or NGK.
Back in 1979, I decided to give my '78 1200 a 'tune up', so I went to the
parts store and bought some nice, shiny new Champions. Went fine for about
5 days. Then the temp dropped below 45 degrees and the car wouldn't start.
Called Toy of Gfld (was actually a differnt name then) and asked, "Yo,
what up!" and Jim, the S.M. said. "pull the champs and use ND's" Never
looked back since!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Corolla spark plug replacement |

IIRC, the name was Petrin's Toyota at that time. Great bunch of people.
Also aroud that time, the service manager Raoul left and Jim, the owner,
took over the service dept himself. Jim didn't seem to be interested in
squeezing every penny out of everyone who called or walked throught the door
and genuinely wanted to keep his customers happy. For example, he could
have told you to bring it in the shop and then charge you for a tune-up
instead of giving you the easy fix over the phone.
With the longish hair, moustache, and casual dress, Jim looked a little like
Rusty Jones in the showroom window and people used to think that was Jim in
the poster.

I had a couple of mechanics try to put Champions in my 3K-C (79) They
looked at me funny when I told them I wanted Bosch, ND or NGK. "Why, what's
wrong with Champions?"

I am sitting here with a massive SEG on my face: you hit *all* of that
right on the head!!! Except, Jim's Dad owned the dealership since it was a
Nash dealer, picked up Toyotas in 1964, selling mostly FJ40's. When Jim's
Dad died, he and his brother Bud took over, Bud doing sales and Jim doing
service. Always wore a blue 'denim' shirt, and was one of the *most*
knowledgeable service managers I have ever known. And Rusty Jones sure hit
that one on the head!!! They *were* a great bunch, and always did their
best to keep me and my family happy! (My Dad was a Nash/Rambler guy, so do
I need to tell you where he bought cars? A few years after he died, my
stepfather decided to buy a Toyota, and *my* first car was a brand-new
1974 Corolla 1200, lemon yellow. And a 1972 Corona MKII Coupe. AND a 1978
Corolla 1200...)
So, last summer I decided I was not making enough money selling used cars
where I am, and the local Subaru dealer was advertising an opening. Can
you possibly guess the asst sales manager that took my application? (Kinda
*still* looks like Rusty!!!)
They were a great bunch of people, all of them. I was only a teenager
then, but I will *never* forget how Petrin's introduced me to Toyotas!

A lot of Toyota Motor Sales, USA's original employees came from
Nash/Rambler/AMC and VW. When looking for francchisees for a brand that
nobody heard of, they went to the dealers they knew and so a lot of early
Toyota dealers had the same backgrounds. The dealer in North Adams also was
a Nash/Rambler/AMC/Jeep/Eagle/Renault dealer.

Thanks for all the input. Actually, I am not sure when it is right time
to replace the plugs. I pulled out one of the plugs, it looked OK to
me(according to the pictures listed in Haynes's repair manual). The car
has 120K on it, and plugs have never been replaced before, and the car
starts OK, even in winter(33 degree here at PA). Should I wait for a
couple of months or a year to repace them? >> Stay informed about: Corolla spark plug replacement |
