This is an 85 Olds Custom Cruiser STW. It's got the 307 Olds engine,
not a Chevy engine. I need to replace the trans. with a used one.
I am still trying to ID the trans. It says METRIC on the pan and is
the three speed model WITH Overdrive, and has the 4 pin electric cable
hooked to it, without vacuum modulator. The car is old and worn, so
I'm not willing to stick a lot of money in it. I can get a used Chevy
trans. from a V8, for a good price. This is a common Chevy trans.
WITH the modulator. I realize I will have to somehow run a vacuum
line, and modify the shift linkage. But the first thing is whether
the transmission will bolt in place, and driveshaft spline will fit,
etc. Does anyone have any sort of cross references info?
I am not sure what year this trans. is, but I can find that out if
there is a chance of it fitting.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

We really need more information, specifics like what exactly the Chevy
transmission is, some of them were drilled with duel bolt patterns for Chevy
and other GM V8 motors. To many variables to answer with the info you've
provided.

OK, I will have to contact the guy with that trans. But maybe you can
help me ID which one I have now. This is an 85 Custom Cruiser with
the 307 5.0L Olds engine. It has the 3speed W/ OD (or also seems to
be known as a 4speed). I have looked on the web for hours, and it
seems that the THM 200 & 2004R are my only options for a 1985 car.
It appears that they began using the 7004R in later models. How can I
know for sure what I have? Does the vehicle VIN number contain that
info, and if it does, how do I decode it? Otherwise, is there a
number somewhere on the transmission, and where?
At least if I know what I have, I can start to know what will replace
it. The guy at the local parts store thought I had that 700XXX model,
but I am not finding any of those 700xxx ones used in the 1985's.
I appreciate all help.

Look at the pan. If it's long and seems to be almost split into two
sections, it's a Thm200r4. If your sure it's a four speed, that's about all
it could be. The Thm7004r comes in Chevy only bolt pattern (the 200R4 comes
in a dual bolt pattern that will bolt to BOP and Chevy engines.) If the
Chevy trans your looking at has a vacuum modulator then it's a 3 speed.
(probably a thm350).

If it is an Overdrive transmission it is a TH200R4.
Olds-Biuck-Pontiac use the same bellhousing bolt patterns. Chevy uses
one of it's own. You should be able to get the correct transmission from a
salvage yard for $150 or less.
