I actually did a Google search on this first...

Anyhow; I have a 2000 Golf 1.8 with 42,000 miles on it. Last month I had
the 40,000 mile maintenance done.
My reward for that was having the check engine light come on today. The car
is running normally.
How critical is this to attend to immediately? I mean, if I put 100 miles
on it, is the engine likely to disintegrate? Am I risking being stranded
somewhere?

With my wife in the hospital and the kids home from school, I don't have
time for much that isn't urgent.

What other lights come on with the engine light?..... its probably something
stupid like the gas cap is too loose.... I would really be concerned if the
oil pressure, or temp lights came one... but ONLY the engine light.... I
might just chalk that up to something really stupid/minor.

My understanding is that unless the check engine light is flashing on
and off constantly, you can wait.

Just check the fluid levels of your car, have a look at the color and see if it
looks burned, discolored or anything, if not, it's probably something emision
related (which some people consider very urgent). Probably a faulty
sensor/spark, but your engine should be able to deal with that for the next
couple of weeks.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

For what it's worth - my 98 Jetta had the check engine light come on and it
was the oxygen sensor. $145 later (part and installation) it was all set.
Some auto parts stores (AutoZone is one, if there's one in your area) will
diagnose a check engine light for free. Good Luck
