Does the trouble code display sequence using the trip odometer
necessarily display all registered fault codes?

The "Check Engine" light is on in my 2001 SE wagon. The diagnostic
display flashes "Dtc" / "none" and yet the amber light has been on for
weeks now. The only trouble I have had is with the speed sensor, but it
hasn't acted up for quite some time. I always tighten my fuel filler
cap so I'm sure it's not that.

Will a proper OBD II code reader be able to tell me more than the
dashboard display? Does anyone really know what all the things mean in
the diagnostic sequence? While it's fun to make the gauges whirl
around, I haven't gotten much use out of that feature.

Thanks for the links. Also it's good to know there are cheaper OBD II
code readers than the 200 $CDN ones I've seen.

I found the instrument cluster test sequence a little different from
the Mustang's. I typed out a dump of my codes with my best guess at
interpreting them. If anyone can correct or fill in the blanks, please
do.

I had this with my 2001 SE wagon as well. It turned out to be the
DPFE, a $40 part from Ford.
