Hi,

Well, got myself yet another 900 T16 (SPG), this one's a 1990 UK model
..Only thing wrong is that neither window works. I'm hoping it's just the
switches or fuse, but going from past experience it's probably not. I've
always paid to have my other windows fixed, but this time I'm going to do it
myself.

So, please can anyone give me a quick "idiots guide" to getting the window
and motors etc in and out of the door? I was just going to buy a recon motor
and window kit from partsforsaabs, but it'd be useful if I have a vague idea
of what I'm taking on first. I'm not too bad with spanners, managed a full
engine swap on the last T16 (and it still goes!!) but electric windows have
always frightened me off....

Thanks in advance!!
mike

It's really not that hard. Remove the door trim, remove the screws which
hold the window glass to the regulator, remove the bolts which hold the
regulator assembly to the door, withdraw regulator assembly.

It helps to have another pair of hands (or lots of gaffer tape) to hold
the window glass in place.

As far as recon motors, I've never needed one. The brushes are rarely
very worn. What the motors need is a stripdown, cleanup and oil.

Thanks for your advice Grunff. Will give it a go at the weekend.

From memory...

Remove the door handle surround; remove the screws holding the door inner
shell to the door. Set these aside.

The motor has a spur gear on it which drives the window up and down.
The easiest thing to check, and do this before you buy anything, is if it's
just gummed up. At that age, it's not unreasonable to think that the
substance-formerly-known-as-grease on the clock spring, and in the motor
assembly, have formed into a rock-like substance. Degrease the spring with
your favorite solvent, and re-apply something preferably of the synthetic
variety. Then, while you have the motor off of the door (just hanging
inside is fine), see if the motor runs. If the gear turns a bit, or
sluggishly, then it's gummed up inside. It's fairly easy to remove the
side plate & degrease and relube that as well.

If you've handled an engine swap, the window motors will be dead simple for
you. No worries.

Thanks For your help Dave! Engine swap wasn't hard at all. I've done pretty
much everything else on a car, but even non-electric windows scare me!! My
last 900 had a right side window that would stick if you wound it right
down. Solution was to remove the door card and thwack the motor with a
hammer while pressing the switch..

Hi Mike - congrats on the new purchase.

One thing before you pull the doors apart ... open the actual switches
and check for current passing. "Tired window syndrome" is attributed to
a lack of current able to pass through the swicth due to poor contacts
- the contacts can be scraped clean. I presume that "stuck" windows
*could* be an extreme case of this ...

Ha, ha! That doesn't sound as though you're scared to me, it's possibly its
opposite, though...

If you have Discovery Channel, try to catch a rerun of "Wheeler Dealers",
daily at 19:00 hrs, where they have a 900 with the same problem, was an easy
fix. Turned out to be the motors.

You could find a slight older C900 with manual windows and grab the
doors Smile You should have been the strange looks I got when I had to
show people how to use a manual window crank.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
