Hi Guys.
Excuse my ignorance, but one thing I have wondered lately is why the TF cars
have gone back to using the larger front wheels?
I remember back in the late 80's they went from the larger wheels to the
smaller, go cart type front wheels, claiming they created less air flow
turbulence.
I notice by the mid 90's they had all switched back to the larger wheels
again.
What was the reason for that?

Actually, I remember they lasted less than that.
I think one reason I heard is the difference in rollout between the
starting beams, and all said and done, they thought they didn't make
much of a difference overall. Add to this, the covered canopy which
several had experimented with. >> Stay informed about: Big or small |

Speed. Top Fuel is faster and maybe Goodyear tires are safer. Maybe?

Thanks Sam.
I am not trying to be smart here or anything but if they didn't make much of
a difference, how come EVERYONE has changed back?
You would think there would still be some small wheel models out there.
Personally I thought they looked ridiculous but they eventually grew on me
and I have always wondered why they did not stick with them.
Its just me thinking out loud here.

The reason everyone changed back is because the NHRA mandated the larger
tire/wheel combo. I'm not sure of the reasoning behind this though...

A small wheel would be running a lot of RPM at the top end.
I think that's probably why they don't use the small wheels,
safety reasons. The small tire could possibly explode.

That was my other thoughts too George.
I would have also thought the extra RPM drag load on the bearings would have
out weighed the advantages of less windage from the larger wheels.

Apart from safety, roll out would be the major one, more rollout you can

If I remember correctly, it was another idea/fad started by the master
Garlits. Always innovating and trying new things, others responded by
following the latest Garlits idea. Until after a long evaluation period
they all switched back.
He's my all time TF nominee. Opps, wrong posting reply.

I think I remember reading that one reason or thinking was that the car
steers better with the larger wheel because they work more like a rudder in
the wind.
I may be completely wrong but I thought I'd throw that in the mix. >> Stay informed about: Big or small |

You know I had never even given that a thought, however I think you would be
right.
The surface area of the 2 wheels would create quite a bit of wind steerage
at 300+mph.
I wouldn't mind guessing that the wind steering at that speed would be more
responsive to the rubber tyres hitting the ground.
That could also explain why a lot of TF have solid front rims rather than
the old spokes.

algorithms.
Why is transfer of Salomon proprietary source to a vendor's site the last
step to try? Because Salomon loses control over the code. In the Informix
/Sybase case, the vendor Informix requested (and received) another copy
of the code "because I lost the previous copy".
Two emails between the pair are enclosed.

So what does this have to do with my original post asking about the big or
