I have a 1996 Ram 1500,with a 318, auto with 250K miles on it. It recently
started to back fire when I accelerate other than that it runs fine. I
rebuilt the top end at 240K and one of the O2 senors is bad. Anyone have any
thoughts on what it might be? The only error code I get is for the O2
sensor.
Thanks

The wires are fairly new, 15 - 20K, checked cap, rotor both look good.... I
am leaning toward replacing the timing chain. But if I can find the problem,
I'll replace it this winter. Any other ideas? >> Stay informed about: Back firing thru intake |

Fuel pump? Mine started acting like that when the fuel pump started
going south. Sometimes it would run fine under acceleration, other
times it would hesitate and seem like the timing was off. Check your
fuel pressure, if the pump is slowly dying, it could cause some of
those symptoms.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Back firing thru intake |

You're lean. Check for an air leak. Could be the manifold gasket. You may
hear a rattle. Pull the plugs and look for an oily one (lifter valley
vapor).

Backfiring through the intake is usually a symptom of a lean mixture.
Older vehicles would drive you crazy doing it if the accelerator pump
in the carburetor stopped pumping.
Does the O2 sensor not have a lot to do in controlling your mixture?
So many Garys ..so..

Well it seems like everyone is really cheap.I had backfiring in my ram 2500 too.So i went out and bought champion double platinum plugs which cost about 15 bucks for all of them, new wires which were 30 bucks and a cap and rotor which was 20 bucks.I had a friend put it in for 50 bucks.I'm sure you must know someone who can help you put them in.I went and got it priced to have a shop replace just the plugs and wires and they wanted 200 dollars.
