Today I received a phone call that I can truly say was unexpected. It was
from the dealer from whom I bought my '64 Daytona Wagonaire...in 1964. I
hadn't seen him in 40 years though I did talk to him 11 years ago (as he
reminded me). When I bought the wagon he was operating as Joe Egle Motors
in Olathe, Kansas. When he bought the dealership from the old man who was
the previous owner, it was a Studebaker only dealership. However, Joe soon
took on MG, Austin Healey, Morris-Minor and Jaguar and he got the service
franchise for Roll-Royce. He didn't sell many Studebakers. He bought the
dealership in '63 and quit selling Studebakers after the '64 model year. He
told me today that he didn't want to sell cars with Chevrolet engines (man
after Studebob's heart).
Anyhow, the reason I called him 11 years ago was that he advertised in
Hemmings that he was selling off his collection by auction. I called to see
if he still had any Studebaker stuff (he didn't). He clearly remembered me
and the purchase of the Wagonaire and we had a nice chat about it. He
mailed me a catalog of his auction (a number of very nice cars) and he
enclosed one of his old dealership decals for me to put on the wagon (I
didn't in '64 and didn't 11 years ago either- won't buy a car with a dealer
sticker on it). He apparently kept a good record of our conversation since
he had my phone number.
The reason he called me today was- he wanted to buy my car back. He said he
woke up in the night and decided he wanted a Studebaker sliding roof wagon
again and he remembered mine. He is a meticulous record keeper because he
asked me if I remembered how much sales tax I paid on the car and how much
difference I paid with my '61 Cruiser trade-in. When I admitted that I
didn't remember, he read the figures to me. He said "I can even give you
the key numbers if you want".
I told him I'd post the fact that he is looking for a Studebaker. He
prefers a 289 with automatic and, while he would really like a Wagonaire, he
would certainly consider a nice Cruiser ('63 or '64). Joe went on to
reminisce about some of the Studebakers he did sell and was especially
wishing he still had the '63 R-1 Cruiser he had- red with a red velour
(broadcloth) interior.
So, if any of you know of a nice, completely drivable '63 or '64 Wagonaire
(preferably Daytona) or Cruiser, call Joe Egle at 816-931-3674, 3905
Wyoming, Kansas City, MO 64111.

I used to stop in and visit Joe's classic car dealership in Kansas
City whenever I was in town. He always had some very interesting cars
in his inventory. A good friend of mine bought several(mostly British)
cars from him and sold him some as well. He had a car trailer that
had a canvas top on it similar to a Conestoga wagon that intriged me.
Joe is a character.

So spring for a SDC membership for him, willya?
He deserves it.
(And so do we, if you can get him on the NG.)

You might refer him to that 5,000 mile wagonaire in this month's TW.
