Folks,
This building could be saved! Unfortunately, according to the State of Indiana Historic Property
listing (availbale on the web), none of the Studebaker manufacturing complex is on the National or
State register of Historic Places. Even if a building is on the register it doesn't prevent an owner
from modifying or demolishing a listed building, however if federal funds are or have been used in
the building the owner has to comply with federal regulations with respect to impacts on histroic
properties. The good news for those who might try to save the building is that the federal
regualtions do not require a building actually be on the register, only that it be eligable to be on
the register. This means if the building is 50 years old or older it has to be evaulated prior to
modifiaction or demolition. Someone (preferably local) needs to contact the local Historical Society
and ask them to get involved in the process. Without action, the entire Studebaker complex could
disappear right before our eyes.
