I was told by the local alternator repair guy he couldn't verify that
the alternator in my 80 pickup was the original. He said its the "B"
wiring and not 40 amp but if I get the wrong regulator it can mess up
my wiring harness. Anyone with any knowledge on this? I know this is
only about me and my little Toyota problem but I'm sure it can
eventually morf into something about queers, the NWO or a milion other
things

As someone mentioned, the easy solution is to take it to the dealer, along
with your VIN and vehicle production date. I doubt if the alternator in
your truck is original, but if you match up the alternator that is currently
installed with the replacement, you should be OK.

Something doesn't sound right about what the alternator guy said, or
maybe you misinterpreted it. The regulator in any twelve volt automotive
alternator/system will by design, regulate to twelve volts. The wire
harness will normally not incur any voltage damage, components that are
connected throughout it may if high voltage spikes occur. Maybe he meant
that the connector on your harness will not fit the alternator if you
get the wrong one of several choices. Your best bet is to take the
alternator that you currently have on the truck to the dealer to match
it up. I'm pretty sure that they will have answers to any compatibility
issues.

Did you consider taking it to another local repair shop for a second
opinion? There are also many online stores that would be able to clue
you into what to look for.

That would never happen.

Did the alternator guy touch your foot? Did he turn the palm up or down
when he reached for the dropped screw? Was he a democrat or republican?

Maybe the B wiring was a signal that he wanted a different type of
electricity.

There is no other local repair shop in this area. This guy has a very
good reputation and was recomended by several people and has been here
for years. Being a small area (7,000 in town) everyone knows everyone
and has a critical opinion of everything. All he works on is
alternators. The dealer is 75 miles away. There are two regulators
with plugs that will connect to the harness. I tried one of the two
and it didn't work it was for the 40 amp and on the bench the
alternator was putting our about 45 amps so it must be the 55 amp
alternator.
