the manual says that the AWD light will come on if different sized
tires were mounted or tire pressures were too far different. Does it
tell you when the center differential is working, like it would if one
axel was slipping?

It sounds like it is simply a warning light, advising you if some
condition (like those noted) could negatively impact the AWD system.

Found out it is Only on the Auto Trans models.((

Check Engine light on & Cruse Control light flashing - Need info for a 2005 Forester XT turbo (USA). I drove into work this AM without a problem. After work, engine idled rough, had a steady check engine light, and flashing cruise light (flashes 1x per second), virtually no power at all. Checked oil, found....
