Hi everyone, my automatic 1999 9-5 2.3 lpt makes a roaring sound b/w 30
and 40 mph. it didn't make that sound before. the noise doesn't seem
to be coming from any side of the car in particular, and the muffler
was replaced a few months ago. it really sounds more like a "wooooo"
than a whine or a grind, and it's pretty loud - my passengers tend to
(annoyingly) point it out. any ideas on what this sound could be? i
can live with it but i don't want it to turn into something much worse
if left unattended. thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer. >> Stay informed about: '99 9-5 auto roaring noise on acceleration |

actually, deeper, like a gutteral mooing or a zombie's groan (sigh).
these are the best ways to describe it.
forgot to add that i had the wheel bearings checked to no avail.

A light whistly noise ? Almost musical ?
Might be the turbo.

Did this sounds start around the same time the muffler was changed?
Then that would be the first thing to consider, and check.
Maybe the muffler touches a body part somewhere and resonates at a certain
speed?
I remember one of my old cars... they replaced the exhaust pipe, and all was
well, UNTIL you started driving and accelerating.
Then the movement of the engine made the pipe just touch the chassis, and
the sound was what you describe.
Its not locatable, because the whole chassis is vibrating making the sound
come from "everywhere"
Good luck!

I had a similar problem, took ages to pinpoint it.
It was two of the tyres that had developed ridges and out-of-round
condition. Replaced the tyres, lost the noise.

I had something similar on my 99 9-5, couldn't quite describe it but it
was (1) about that speed and (2) only under acceleration. Almost
sounded like tire noise on a really aggressive tread.
About 6 months later I started to hear the tell-tale signs of a wheel
bearing going, got that replaced and the grinding/sound went away.
Bet that's it, mine was the left front >> Stay informed about: '99 9-5 auto roaring noise on acceleration |
